Clean Energy vs. Nonrenewable Resources

When you think of the word “clean energy” what comes to mind? Can the average Joe actually define this term? Clean energy is produced by renewable resources. So a way that we are able to make clean energy is by using resources like water, oxygen and the sun. The Organic Comfort Zone CozyPure  products are manufactured with the energy from two wind turbines and solar-panels. Heating and cooling needs are controlled by a GeoThermal system. For over a year we’re proud to report a ZERO kWh usage.

Nonrenewable resources such as coal, oil, and gas are being depleted quickly and can not be reproduced as fast as they are being used. In order to conserve these limited resources we should look for alternative energy sources.

With alternatives like wind, geo, hydrogen and ocean energy we can recreate an advocate the need of using resources efficiently. Why waste a product that is almost gone?

What do you think about the energy alternatives? What are some other ways to conserve our energy resources? Share your comments below.

=========================

Around here, every day is Earth Day, but on April 22nd we always like to do something a little special to celebrate this gorgeous planet we all live on.

For a minute, let’s forget about oil spills and discarded plastic bags floating in our waters. Instead let’s think about the beauty of a majestic mountain side, a quiet walk through a park, or the serenity of an isolated beach. These simple pleasures of nature are worth preserving – I don’t care which political party you’re devoted to… EVERY person needs the planet’s resources to LIVE, and it’s an extra treat to also enjoy her beauty.  Just try to imagine a world with no trees or beaches drenched with oil and debris. Where would we go on vacation?

It’s our simple choices that can make a difference. Little things like taking your own darn bag to the market. Make a commitment to try this for one month – or at least pledge not to use any plastic bags today. Just one day. Come on now, give it a try… you can do it.

To show our appreciation to our customers we’re GIVING AWAY THREE  GIFT CERTIFICATES to use at www.cozypure.com – manufacturers of green organic bedding that’s healthy and made to last. They also generate their own energy to operate their factory.  Organic bedding produced from the power of the wind and sun… How cool is that?

TO ENTER THE GIVEAWAY simply fill out this form and let us know why you should win. That’s it – We like to keep things simple. We’ll randomly choose three lucky winners and post the names on our facebook wall.

LAST DAY TO SUBMIT AN ENTRY IS APRIL 30, 2011.
If you’re not sure what to write maybe you should sleep on it… with a CozyPure® pillow of course.

  • One Winner will receive a $100 Gift Certificate
  • Two Winners will receive a $50 Gift Certificate

Now for all you folks who feel like you never win anything? Here’s a list of other super sales going on right now:

Good luck to everyone!
All of us here at Organic Comfort Zone want to wish you a very happy Earth Day. Remember no plastic bags today!!

How the heck can bedding be good for the Earth?

There’s a lot of people that ask that question. They don’t really take the time to think about what’s inside conventional bedding. You know what I’m talking about – those $100 bed-in-a-bag packages. The $499 Plushtop Queen mattress set. The fake softness of a synthetic fleece blanket.

Most all of these types of conventional mattresses and bedding are made with cheap foams or petroleum based polyester batting and fabrics. And many times they’re produced using undisclosed amounts of toxic chemicals.

None of these chemicals, foams, fabrics  or battings are what you could call “earth-friendly”  – they’re not renewable or sustainable. In fact, the majority are made without quality in mind and are designed for planned obsolescence to break down faster, throw it away and buy a replacement. Also not good for the Earth.

So what’s the solution? Well let’s look at bedding made from eco-smart and natural materials like organic cotton, organic wool and natural latex rubber.  All of these components are renewable and sustainable meaning we don’t exhaust our resources to attain these materials. There are no harmful chemicals added during the production process. The quality exceeds modern expectations of conventional bedding which means you get real value because it will actually last you much longer than that so-called “bargain”. In contrast, organic bedding is great for the health of our planet Earth. Hey… did we mention the health benefits to you?

Not to be overlooked are the wonderful advantages organic bedding can provide to the sleeper. You’ll enjoy materials that breathe – just like you do! Temperature regulating wool that’s moisture resistant means you’ll not only sleep more comfortably but it’s also naturally dust-mite resistant. Organic cotton is fine quality cotton at it’s very best with absolutely no chemical treatments or synthetic blends which can contribute to overheating. Natural latex comes from the sap of the rubber tree and contours to your body while providing optimum support – and it’s also breathable and dust-mite resistant.

Organic bedding is simple, classic and timeless. It has tremendous VALUE…. to your health, to the product’s long-term durability and to the Earth as well. Next time you get all cozy with your bed, blankets and pillows – think about what you’re getting cozy with.

CozyPure® organic bedding and mattresses are made in the USA from only ecosmart organic materials. Every item is expertly hand-crafted and ships direct from their factory to consumers nationwide. They’ve been doing it for twenty years and satisfaction is guaranteed.

Countdown to Earth Day: Reduce Electricity

There are lots of ways we can reduce our electricity. Here’s a list of just a few easy steps to take in your everyday lifestyle:

  • USAGE. If you’re not using it, turn it off. Pretty easy!
  • LIGHTBULBS. If you haven’t “switched” to Compact Fluorescents then put this on your list. Not only do they reduce wattage dramatically, they also don’t need replacing as often so perfect for hard to reach places!
  • APPLIANCES. When you need to upgrade your appliances be sure to choose newer models that are energy efficient. The savings in electricity will quickly compensate any additional upfront costs for the purchase.
  • HVAC. Take advantage of the rebates and loans available through many state programs to upgrade your HVAC system. Newer units will save you on your monthly utility bill plus the added incentive of refunds makes this a no-brainer. If you want the very best in efficiency, consider geo-thermal. Remember you’re making an investment, so think long-term and ROI regarding the costs involved.
  • TEMPERATURE. Invest in a programmable thermostat and don’t set your temperature higher than you need. Also change or clean your HVAC filter at least once a month. And don’t forget to vacuum vents too.
  • HOT WATER. Take showers instead of baths. Don’t run the dishwasher for only a few dishes. Wrap your hot water tank with insulation or better yet replace that dinosaur with an on-demand hot water heater. Did we mention low-flow showerheads?

Now if you’re really really serious about claiming your energy independence, you should install solar panels and/or wind turbines which will greatly offset your electricity use –see photo below showing our utility bill to run our offices and factory.

But remember – you must make the simple changes before you generate you own power. If you’re not energy-efficient you would need an entire solar panel just to light one regular incandescent lightbulb. It’s about small steps. Start with the every day basic tips and you’ll find it gets easier and easier to take larger strides towards living green and saving money too!

Our solar panels and wind turbines were installed by our sister-company Sunrise Solar and Wind.

Green Living is a Lifestyle

Earth Day is Friday and it’s always a special holiday celebration for us here at Organic Comfort Zone. Our flagship company, Tomorrow’s World, was one of America’s very first “Green stores” and after 20 years we’re pleased as 100% pure punch we’re still around to offer some great eco-friendly basics.

So many green products are also helpful to the end-user, whether it’s being more healthy, saving you money, or better durability. We like to take it a step further since we manufacture our brand products right here in the USA. We never outsource overseas so we’re keeping it local for our transportation carbon footprint as well doing a small part to keep jobs here in America.

Look for products that can help save you money. Energy and water conservation products will cut on your utility usage. Water filters are a great investment since you’ll not have to purchase bottled water.  Choose quality home products designed to last so you’re not replacing them all the time. Better still, choose quality products made from natural and renewable resources – they’re healthier for you and better for our planet.

If you haven’t seen the “Story of Stuff” put it on your list of things to do this week in honor of Celebrating Earth Day. It’s a wonderful 20 minute short film about planned obsolescence and how most products are actually made to fall apart and break down. How we abuse overseas labor and toxic chemicals to make products cheaper. It’s a very insightful little film that will get you thinking about products before you buy them.

After watching the movie you may find yourself rethinking your buying habits. Cheap disposable products won’t seem as appealing anymore and you’ll want to invest in quality products – like the products we offer. We’re pretty strict on our standards and take pride in the longevity of our products.  Take a peek for yourself and visit CozyPure next time you’re looking for organic bedding. If you need a few green-living basics (like water filters or canvas shopping bags) then visit the www.tomorrowsworld.com website.

In fact- if you hurry –

Tomorrow’s World has a store-wide sale going on right now. 15% off everything even clearance items! The sale ends April 24, 2011 so take a visit over there for some fantastic eco-friendly basics that help you live a green lifestyle while saving a little green in your wallet too.

If CBS says organic bedding is important then it must be true!

Actually we’ve been teaching (and providing) the benefits of organic sleep for 20 years… but it’s always great when an official news source such as ABC, NBC, or CBS also states the claim that bedding is one of the important product choices when choosing something “organic”.

People often times don’t think of how intimate they are with their bedding and mattress. You get close.  In fact, you get close for one-third of your life cuddled up in that bedding. Probably closer than anything else in your life, right?

And when you get that close to something for that amount of time, you want to be assured it feels good and it’s safe for you too.  After all we’re not twenty-one forever. There comes a time when we have to get serious about what we’re getting close to… it’s that simple.

Most conventional bedding and mattresses are made from synthetic materials derived from petroleum as well as soaked with other undisclosed chemicals you can’t spell yet alone pronounce. We love the fact that our CozyPure Organic Bedding and Natural Latex Mattresses are made with ingredients from the Earth that your body will naturally resonate with to enjoy healthy, deep sleep.

You can spell and pronounce every ingredient: Organic Cotton, Organic Wool, Natural Latex Rubber. “That’s all folks!”

No foams dipped in funky stuff or fabrics coated with shiny stuff.

Improvements and new technology are very good up to a point;  however there are some things that are best left simple, pure and undisturbed. Like sleeping. And getting close. Be sure your mattress and bedding are up for that simple challenge. If not, we can help.

The making of a new and improved organic sofa day bed.

In between doing this and doing that – today I’ve been working on the redesign of our EcoTerra Sofa Day Bed. I love our EcoTerra and we use two of them in my family room. Comfortable, spacious, sturdy and attractive, but I also know some folks want a more “traditional” look of an upholstered sofa. It’s something I’ve been wanting to rework since we introduced the EcoTerra a few months ago. So today I made the commitment to spend a few hours working with padding, pillows, fabrics, tucking, tying, tossing and just nodding my head yes or no. After many different prototypes I’m pretty sure the way I want to go will not be an option but rather a choice between covered side and back panels with cushion inserts OR the wrap around arm cushions.

I hope to wrap this project up by end of this week or early next week.

The NEW configuration will include the wood frame and mattress-seat-cushion ONLY – then the customers will begin to “build and design” their own sofa using various pillows, cushions and fabric combinations. I’m excited about the EcoTerra since it’s one of the very few “authentic” organic sofas offered. No soy-based foams or springs or synthetic blended fabrics. This is the real deal from the sustainable wood to the natural rubber to the certified organic cotton. Just about all the pieces are modular and separately replaceable if necessary which is really great for long-term practicality.

As soon as we complete the final finishing touches of the new fabric panels, we’ll post photos and a video to show the different configurations. I’ll keep you posted on our progress!

Is It Safe to Bring Bedding From Home to Hotels?

With hotel bedbug plagues making the news, people who travel often for business or pleasure have been forced to take extra caution when unpacking in rooms and at home. The notion that bedbugs only stay in bed is a myth, for it’s strongly recommended to take luggage directly to a safe place after your trip and make sure all clothes and the luggage are sanitized. That said, it’s not uncommon for people to bring their own bedding on trips. Is that safe to do?

Why bring your own pillow and blanket to a hotel? Certainly there is no shortage where you are staying, and major chains make no secret of how they work to bring guests quality sheets and pillows. For some of us, however, there are important reasons why it’s necessary:

  • There are health issues. If one suffers from orthopedic problems and has a pillow for better sleep support, it’s sometimes better just to bring that along.
  • Sometimes, a familiar pillow or blanket offers the comfort of home one doesn’t usually find in a hotel. Especially for small children who might have anxieties about leaving home, it is not unusual to take along a blanket or stuffed animal, or even a pillow with their favorite cartoon character on the case.

So we have explored the why’s, now let’s think about the what if’s. What if your home bedding should become infested with bedbugs while you are away. There is the risk, even in highest quality hotels. As with any other infestation, you want to deal with the issues quickly so there is no chance of bringing the critters to bed with you once you’re back from vacation.

It is important to note that whatever you bring home from your stay – pillows, blankets, coats, and clothing – should not be taken directly to your room on your return. If you have a garage, clear some space and unload everything there. What can be washed, bag in plastic and take to your laundry room immediately. With pillows that cannot be washed, you may wish to consider placing them in plastic and leaving in a sunny location for a few days. Bedbugs are known not to survive in extreme temperatures. After a few days, clean as you normally would.

If you are concerned about bugs when you travel, you may want to consider leaving the comforts at home where they are safe. An investment in a travel support pillow can help, just make sure you observe the same cleaning practices when you come home. It never hurts to be cautious, especially with the risk of home infestation.
