Is it really natural?

certificates.jpg

Some folks are people-watchers. I’m a label-reader. When we’re out shopping at a store, I’ll always get distracted looking at products and investigating their contents. My kids grab my hand, and yank me down the aisle saying, “Mom, you said we’d only be here a few minutes!” I’m good to go… until I hit the next aisle. And then, as the saying goes, history repeats itself.

The cleaning department has some of the best labels. Now with the eco-green movement, you’ll find labels shouting “fantastic orange” or “citrus sparkle”. But when I read the ingredients, it’s full of toxic chemicals. Not even one little orange peel. How misleading and unfair this is to the general public. I have an upper-hand because I know what to look for, and I think of the thousands of people that don’t know. They buy it, thinking they’re getting something that they’re not.

Now that organic bedding and natural mattresses are becoming more popular, the same thing is happening. I’m dismayed at the amount of “natural” latex mattresses available today. Being in the industry, I know what’s in most of them, and it certainly is not natural. Most are synthetic-latex surrounded by layers of synthetic foam. But hey, there could be about 20% natural stuff inside so they call it natural and since many consumers take things at face value, it works.

Sometimes a customer will call to say they found a queen size latex mattress at their neighborhood store for only $600. They want to know why a CozyPure® mattress cost so much more. Well folks, it’s in the label. Heck, our raw supplies and labor cost us more than $600, but at least we’re making the real deal. Unfortunately, organic materials carry a higher price tag, so if you’re serious about purchasing one, you should know it will be more expensive, no matter where you buy it. In the meantime, if you happen to see a great deal, just ask for the label.

Sleep healthy and well.

King is the new Queen: claiming your space

king_sz.jpg

Do you know what is really funny? If you happen to read a novel written back in the late 60’s, early 70’s, you’ll often see a line such as: “the big full size bed”, or “the large double bed”. Back then, a full size bed was considered big and a Queen mattress was considered really big. In fact it wasn’t until the late 90’s that the Queen became the most popular mattress size. That is, until now. Seems folks are once again going up a notch. They want to claim their personal space. And boy-oh-boy that can be a wonderful thing when you are sleeping!

I’m not sure how my husband and I slept on a Queen Size for so long. Now that we are on a King Size, I love having that bit of extra space. When we were sleeping on a Queen mattress, he’d roll over, right into me and my space. Yessiree… I miss the adventure of waking up a few times in the middle of the night with his elbow poking into my eyeball. But that has all changed….

When people ask me if I have a “MYSPACE”, I tell them: “Yeah, in my king size bed”. Many of our “coupled” customers are also claiming their own “space” because our best-selling natural latex rubber mattresses are being purchased in King size over the Queen.

Here’s some tips and guidelines to consider the next time you’re purchasing a new mattress:

Full beds, sometimes still called “double,” are 53 inches wide, which is just 15 inches wider than a twin size (single). That leaves each partner only 27 inches of personal space, or about the width of a crib. Both twin and full sizes are approximately 75 inches long, which may be too short for some adults, especially men.

Recommendations: Full size is only enough space for a single sleeper and only if under 5 feet 5 inches tall. Parents are increasingly choosing full size over twin for teenage bedrooms, and even for younger children in order to give parents a more comfortable place to rest when reading together at tuck-in time.

Queen beds are 60 inches wide by approximately 80 inches long – 6 inches wider and 5 inches longer than a full size mattress. These added inches can make all the difference in comfort, especially for couples, and have made the queen today’s most popular mattress size. However, with 30 inches of personal space, each adult still has 9 inches less width than if they slept alone in a twin bed.

Recommendations: Queen size is a good choice for guest rooms, smaller master bedrooms and for couples who prefer close quarters. It’s also a great choice for single sleepers who are also “sprawlers.”

King beds are 76 inches wide by approximately 80 inches long – about 18 inches wider than a queen. This is the closest a couple can come to having as much personal space (38 inches) as each would have on a twin bed. In fact, two twin extra-long beds pushed together are about the same size, an option that can offer a flexible arrangement for a guest room.

**For consumers on the west coast, there is also the “California King,” which is 72 inches wide by 84 inches long – 4 inches narrower and 4 inches longer than a regular king.

Recommendations: King size is the best choice for couples that want maximum personal sleeping space. It’s also the best bet to accommodate that time on Sunday morning when children may pop into bed – or if the pets in your house have mattress privileges! However, size can be a problem. Even with a “split box spring” – two twin-size foundations to support it – to make a king set more manageable, it may be too big for some bedrooms or too bulky to navigate through some corridors, doors and stairwells. It’s a good idea to break out the tape measure if there is any doubt.

Mattress size chart

California King 72″ x 84″
Eastern King 76″ x 80″
Queen 60″ x 80″
Full (“double”) 53″ x 75″
Twin 38″ x 75″

(All dimensions may vary by +/- one half inch)

Mattress Warranty Confusion

sweet sleep

I read an interesting article today that cited how people put off buying a mattress until the last minute. This is so true. We have many folks call at the last minute, in their final desperation, to find a new mattress so they can get a good night’s sleep. That’s because a mattress is something we need, not necessarily something we want. So we put it off, and put it off, waiting for the good old warranty to expire to tell us when it’s time to get a new one.

The thing about warranties is they basically let you know how long the mattress should “last” before it begins to slowly self-destruct with the inevitable breakdown of the components. Warranties don’t include normal wear and tear such as stains, kids jumping on the bed, use of improper foundations, or lack or owner’s maintenance. But the most important thing they don’t cover is changes to our body over the 10 year period. Because we do change in age and sometimes in size, the comfort will change as well. As you age, you may find you need a softer surface to cradle areas of your body and relief pressure points. But most people will hold on to that mattress for the length of the warranty, and sometimes longer, even though it is no longer comfortable.

Speaking of warranties… a mattress is one of the few household items where the warranty is over 5 years. Heck, when you buy that plasma TV for $2000 it carries at most a 2 year warranty. The same goes with an expensive washer or dryer. If you want 10 year coverage, you have to buy an extended warranty. But since this has been industry standard for years, everyone expects a 10 or 20 year warranty with their mattress. And since it doesn’t cover the wear and tear, and there are no moving electronic parts, it’s not that hard to offer one. Just remember to keep in mind that simply because it will last that long, it doesn’t mean it will offer the same comfort 10 or 20 years down the line. Because sometimes it does. And sometimes it doesn’t.

The most important thing in comfort, even long-term, is to know what components are used to make the mattress. For example, foam has a tendency to break down quicker than latex. Using many layers of thick natural fiber batting such as wool and cotton, will compress and create a very firm mattress. Obviously, with time, innersprings have a tendency to squeak, and possibly sag (depending on the gauge and coil count), zippered latex beds which come in layers, often shift, create friction or oxidation if any air gets in there, which can deteriorate through latex-dusting. So knowing how your mattess is constructed, and the components within, will help you understand just how long that warranty is valid in terms of comfort.

If you find your bed to be unbearable, make a checklist:

1- Did you age-up into a new decade? (for instance from 30’s to 40’s)
2- Have you lost or gained weight?
3- Have you had any injuries? (specifically back, neck, shoulder or hip)
4- How is the mattress constructed?
5- What materials are inside the mattress?
6- How old is the mattress?

The answers to the above questions are a big part of the comfort-zone for your bed. And don’t forget, if you’re under more-than-normal amount of stress, that too will have a factor on your comfort since we tense-up and can’t relax compeletly with extreme anxiety. And it’s a fact that we carry stress in our backs which we feel during sleep and when we rise. But yoga or exercise can help with stress, so try that before buying a new mattress!

My point in writing about this topic isn’t intended to be all doom & gloom. In fact, just like other companies, we also carry the industry-standard mattress warranty. I’m writing because we get calls from people who seem so discouraged because they bought a mattress from “such & such a company”, and the mattress is only eight years old. They don’t understand why it’s uncomfortable when it should have two more years left. It would be easy for us to say: “Well, you shouldn’t have bought a ‘Brand X’ mattress” (which perhaps could be valid in terms of quality). But mostly we just tell them the truth about natural body changes, and how a warranty can’t cover that. We’re not saying this is the case all the time. Certainly there are mattresses with manufacturer’s defects, however they tend to reveal themselves within the first six months. So if you’ve had your mattress for more than 10 years, and you’re still comfortable, pat yourself on the back for a sound investment. There aren’t too many things out there that can really have an impact and affect the quality of your life. And a comfortable mattress is one of them.

Sweet dreams!

It’s our annual sale on CozyPure organic mattresses! We have an agreement with our suppliers that once a year they give us a discount, which we extend to our cutomers. This year we picked the month of May since it’s National Better Sleep month. What better way to get better sleep…. than to get yourself on an organic mattress? And they’re not derived from crude oil . When you see and feel and smell our materials versus what is used in most mattresses, you can appreciate the exquisite simplicity of nature’s gift in providing us with these purely delightful components. Cut & Sew Expansion is Underway for EcoAveUsa and CozyPure Organic Bedding

cut & sew small sergerDebi with organic apparel

Tomorrow we’ll have a demo crew on-site to tear down walls and expand our cut & sew department. We’re taking out the full size kitchen since no one uses it anyway. It’s funny because originally we were so excited to have this huge kitchen, complete with oven, wrap-around counters and cabinets, etc. Heck, we cook at home so it’s the last thing we want to do at work. The only thing we do use is our energy-efficient Vestfrost refrigerator, which we’ll move to the main office area.

So, today we pack and wrap everything tight, then hang heavy plastic drapes to keep the demo area isolated. We’ll be getting some new sewing machines in next week too, and we’re all excited. It’s great to have our own local cut & sews, both on-site and a few off-site, so we can continue to offer our “Made in the USA” organic comfort zone products. The expansion will serve us well for textile storage, but more importantly it will allow for a larger cutting table, which will be SO helpful when producing our organic bedding items.

Thank you all for your continued support of both organic textiles and made in the USA products.

Organic Pillows: Kapok and more

Kapok filling has been around for decades. It’s extremely soft and fluffy and is derived from the kapok tree “pods”, sometimes referred to as silk java. I have every one of our pillows on my bed. Pillows are VERY personal, and hard to recommend. It’s easier to help folks with mattresses, believe it or not. With the proper questions, you can easily recommend comfort levels for mattresses, but pillows are the things we hug, scrunch, fluff, bunch-up, layer and so forth. It’s much harder to get a handle on the personal preference. Take me for example, I have the wool extra-fill propped up against my headboard at a 45 degree angle, then I place another pillow (usually the shredded rubber or kapok) at another angle on top of that one. I need the neck support for a side sleeper, yet always end up on my back, so I also need something that will flatten a bit. I’ve got it figured out — for ME. If for some reason I get a bad kink in my neck, I’ll switch to the buckwheat hull pillow which is very supportive and unique (but not soft). I rarely use the organic cotton pillows since they become very flat, and are better for stomach sleepers. The rubber contour pillow is great, but just a little too dense for me. My hubby loves it tho. The best thing is to choose a pillow suited for your sleeping position. Once you know what the loft should be, then it’s up to you to pick which material you think you’d enjoy most. It’s not something to overlook, because your pillow will provide some serious comfort to your overall sleep enjoyment (proper head, neck, and spine alignment). And when everything is balanced and comfortable, you’ll reap the wonderful rewards of a great night’s sleep! If you need a little help, give us a call at 1.800.229.7571 and we’ll try our best to help you make the perfect selection.

Chemicals and Breast Cancer

There was an interesting article in “Ms.” Magazine about breast cancer targeted to geographical areas. Apparently certain parts of the country are at higher risk because of the surrounding environment (and the chemicals).

Of specific interest: “Some researchers maintain… that it reflects the advent of many new synthetic chemicals after World War II, including petrochemicals and plastics. These chemicals’ presence in the environment has leapt from 350-fold in the last five decades, according to the book “A Scientific Detective Story” (Dutton Books, 1996). They argue that since many of these chemicals are hormone-disrupting, they may well contribute to the rise in reproductive cancers and other chronic diseases.”

Just another good reason to go organic! There are NO petrochemicals in our organic bedding or apparel, so it’s an easy way to eliminate that crap out of your life. In fact, switching to organics is probably the easiest way to improve your health and lifestyle, without going to the gym or going on a diet (not that they are bad things – but they can sometimes be hard – LOL). So organics are definitely something every coach potato should embrace!
