Most eco-smart materials are derived from what was commonplace decades ago... natural fibers.
Luxurious organic cotton, pure untreated wool, natural hemp, silky kapok, buckwheat hulls, natural latex rubber... all of these materials are naturally sustainable and easily renewable from the fruit of our planet. A wondrous gift for us to enjoy these delightful materials that feel good, that resonate with our bodies because we are natural and breathing beings. It is our nature to respond well to the natural elements, and the benefits they provide.
Not only do natural materials feel better to us, but they're also much better for the long-term health of our environment. Unlike most synthetic materials which are created from petro-chemical based petroleums, natural fibers are reproduced more readily without harm in extraction, less pollution and toxicity during production and more easily disposed of through recycling or composting.
Organic Cotton versus Conventional Cotton:
"Conventional", "Natural", and "Green" cotton (which accounts for most the cotton you see everywhere) is grown in industrialized countries and is saturated with pesticides and herbicides. The plant also absorbs all the chemicals that modern fertilizers deposit in the soil. Conventionally grown cotton uses more insecticides than any other single crop and epitomizes the worst effects of chemically dependent agriculture. Each year cotton producers around the world use more than 10% of the world's pesticides and nearly 25% of the world's insecticides.
Cotton growers typically use many of the most hazardous pesticides on the market including organophosphates -- originally developed as toxic nerve agents during World War II. It's important to remember that our skin is the largest body organ and it "breathes" through the pores. These pesticides never wash out and the chemicals will off gas from the fabric, while our skin and resporatory systems absorb the toxins.
Benefits of Organic Cotton
The certified organic cotton used in the production of Organic Comfort Zone products, including CozyPure® organic mattresses and bedding is:
# 100% Certified Organic
# Void of toxic chemicals that might be inhaled during sleep
# Comfortable and soft, so that skin is never irritated
# Breathable and absorbent, maximizing air circulation and minimizing perspiration
# Resilient and strong in color, texture, and shape -- a must for aesthetics and functionality
From soil to seed to production...
Certified Organic Cotton requires the soil to be free of residual-agriculture pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, etc before planting the seed to begin the farming of "certified organic cotton". During this three year period, the cotton is known as "transitional". Once the soil is deemed ready, growers may begin to officially produce organic cotton under the stringent mandated requirements of using NO chemical fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides, fungicides, herbicides which would void certification. After growing, the cotton is then milled in production where no bleaches or harmful processing toxins are introduced. Ideally, the finished fabric should then be manufactured in a clean "organic" facility to create the final product. We believe we have one of the cleanest and purist facilities in America. Pure, Untreated, Chemical-Free, Organically-Managed Wool
Wool is one of nature’s most wonderful products and essential for a comfortable, healthy organic sleep system. It's a natural, biodegradable fiber and is both renewable and recyclable. It offers an environmental advantage because it is a natural fiber grown without the extensive use of herbicides and fertilizers. Today, there are many other textile fibers, but science has yet to produce another fiber containing all the natural properties of wool. Wool remains unique -- a masterpiece of nature!
We use both certified organic wool and organically-managed wool in our products. Actually, it's only been in the past 3 or so years you could get certified organic wool - it didn't exist a decade ago. Certified organic wool is from sheep with USDA food certification, the organically-managed wool means the sheep may have received antibiotics when ill, deeming that non-organic for consumption. In terms of the fleece, however, both are very similar. No pesticides or dipping and gentle, chemical-free cleaning (or scouring) of the wool - no acid-washing or toxic processing agents are used. Organically-managed wool is just as good as organic wool in terms of batting and fabrics, and because we need a reliable chain of supply, we also need to secure pure, chemical-free wool that is easily abundant.
CozyPure® Natural Latex Rubber
Harvested by tapping the milk of the Hevea Brasiliensis, otherwise known as the rubber tree. The trees grow in plantations especially selected for their high-quality production. In our process to create a latex rubber bed, an injection system produces the purest natural product for mattress cores that will keep their shape. Once the solid rubber is made with this method, we're left with a mattress core that's supportive, yet soft in the areas we need, like shoulders and hips. Our natural latex rubber is not produced in Asia or India. It is produced in either Belgium or the United States.
