Green Living Healthy Lifestyles Sleep Tips

Greening your bedroom

Since we spend a third to half our lives in our bedrooms or personal space, it makes good sense to make it as healthy as possible. Sleep deprivation has been proven to lead to number of health problems such as high blood pressure. The body needs sleep to replenish the damage of the day can do.

Making your bedroom eco-friendly consists of making many little changes to the decor of the room. This includes getting organic bedding, made with natural cotton, wool and latex, restored furniture, “green” paint, wood floors, natural fiber rugs, energy-efficient light bulbs, a dimmer switch and cotton pajamas. Surrounding yourself with natural fibers, pieces of furniture without glue or chemicals and paints with low- or no-volatile organic compounds (or VOCs) and organic cotton pajamas is a great way to keep your bedroom free of indoor pollution. Small steps like these help ensure that you are getting the most of your sleep experience.

Sleep Clean. Eat Clean.

NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS USUALLY INCLUDE EATING BETTER…
And with the obesity epidemic in the country, a lot of attention is paid to eating healthier and ridding the body of harmful and potentially unhealthy ingredients in our food. The importance of the food we eat is critical. It’s how we get the vitamins and minerals necessary to fuel our bodies. We eat grass-fed meats without antibiotics. We eat high nutrient foods like seeds, vegetables, fruits, beans and nuts to ward-off disease, lose weight, and become healthier and stronger.

organic-produce

The other necessity of life we must have is SLEEP. Every living thing needs it.

A good night’s sleep is so important and vital to our health and well-being. Our healing and recovery. Our vitality and energy. Our restoration and rejuvenation. All this repair of both your body and mind takes place during that night-time shut-eye we call sleep.

mattress_photo_2

Quality deep-sleep
requires optimum comfort which includes temperature regulation, proper support and pressure relief. Restorative healing-sleep requires an environment free of harmful toxins because our bodies shut-down and we’re vulnerable to dermal and airborne elements from the synthetic compounds which outgas and decompose in the bedroom.

WHAT INGREDIENTS ARE IN YOUR BED? Because the bedding industry is basically unregulated in regards to the components inside, you should become familiar with potentially harmful chemicals that make up many of the materials you’re sleeping on. With a little research by any consumer, it’s easy to draw the parallel that the chemicals and proprietary formulas being buried in our sleep surfaces is not too different from the additives and preservatives many food companies are being pressured into removing from their products.

We love reading articles by Vani Hari, otherwise known as the Food Babe. She writes investigative reports about conventional foods, how they’re processed with wicked ingredients, as well as the marketing of “fake” healthy food. So many of her posts about hidden and potentially dangerous ingredients are strikingly similar to the bedding industry – everything from the processing, to the chemicals, to the marketing.

“Why are we willing to accept poisons and harmful chemicals in our bedding, when we are actively rejecting harmful ingredients in our food?”

Perhaps with something as basic as our bedding, we often fall into the old assumption that if it’s for sale, it must be safe. But we are a more informed consumer, with more information and options available to us than ever before. What’s true of our food, should be true of our bedding too. After all, our bedding is one of the most intimate products we use every day! (see Cheryl’s post from 2009)

That’s why here at CozyPure® we liken ourselves to a “Farm to Table” eatery by presenting ourselves as a “Farm to Bed” workshop serving-up handmade organic mattresses and bedding… using only farm fresh ingredients. And we make everything to order, right here in Norfolk, Virginia, USA.

CozyPure’s wool comforter: A lesson in temperature regulation

Working at CozyPure has caused me to examine my sleeping habits. And I’ve discovered something about myself…I’m a cover kicker. For those who aren’t aware of this type of sleeper, it’s when you’re constantly kicking the covers off and searching for them over and over again in the night. I just never seem to be able to find that perfect temperature to maintain REM sleep.

TroyLaNoodle
I may never be much of a heavy sleeper, but I need the sleep I get to mean something positive for my health.

So, I began researching temperature regulation and its effect on a healthy night’s sleep. The facts about this subject were eye-opening. What I have learned is that us endotherms have two zones to regulate during sleep. These two zones are the core temperature and the shell temperature. Now, the brain does the work when it comes to the core temperature. Our hypothamalus regulates the temperature in our core, i.e. the abdominal, thoracic, and cranial cavities, which contain the vital organs. It is our shell temperature that is most affected by external temperature. So, if the room temperature isn’t conducive to proper shell temperature regulation, the result can be a night of pulling the covers on and off, never quit achieving that precious REM sleep we all need for healthy living.

Then I considered my background when it comes to external temperature. My dear departed mother simply could not stand warm weather. To give you an idea, we had a particularly bitter winter with very low temperatures when I was a child. Our heat had given out for a few days. We were all bundled in sweats and blankets. My mother was dressed like it was mid-summer in Florida. Over time, my body became conditioned to being in a pretty chilly indoor environment. I’ve come to prefer a very cool bedroom. Heavy blankets and comforters simply haven’t worked for me.

So, getting the wool comforter from CozyPure and using it for the first time, I was definitely skeptical. The comforter is soft, yet substantial to the touch, at least seemingly more substantial than someone like me could handle. Before I even settled in for my first nap with the comforter, my first thought was that this was going to have me sweating inside of a half-hour period. But as I settled in under the CozyPure comforter, I was eventually given exposure to proper temperature regulation during sleep. I had achieved that level of comfort where you can’t determine where your body ends and the comforter begins. And as for sweating…not a drop. I remained cool and relaxed for the duration of my nap. It’s amazing how nature has the solutions to problems we create in our lives. I may never be much of a heavy sleeper, but I need the sleep I get to mean something positive for my health. Thanks to the CozyPure wool comforter, I can keep my shell temperature just where it needs to be for a healthy restful sleep.

The LaNoodle Pillow Education

I consider myself a country boy with a broad, somewhat worldly perspective. I was born in Maryland. I grew up in North Carolina and Virginia. There are some things country folk are known for, but healthy lifestyles has never been one of them. That being said, I know that there is a certain amount of education that has to occur for someone like me, when it comes to organic products and healthy living. Add to that, I am an overweight, type 2 diabetic, which is a further indication that I do not have a great track record of making healthy choices.

But I’m still fighting to change all that. I’ve cut out fried foods as much as absolutely possible. I’m eating more kale than any ten human beings around me at any given moment these days. Hell, I even got a bike for Christmas … and I’m actually riding it. I’m getting healthier is my point.

TroyLaNoodle
I’m not much of a sleeper, but the LaNoodle pillow is teaching me that a healthy life begins with healthy sleep.

So, coming to work at CozyPure has been a huge step in the right direction and a graduation to another level of educating myself about healthier living. And let me just preface the rest of this by saying that listed on my chart of medical conditions is occasional bouts of insomnia. These bouts have been so frequent that I’ve sort of written off the notion of getting a lot of healthy sleep in my life. But as I’ve learned in a short period of time of working and researching sleep issues at CozyPure, it is definitely something I need to pay more attention to on my quest to healthier living. More sleep equals more energy. And more energy equals more weight loss. I’d clearly neglected a vital link in the chain to a healthier me. I need to solve this whole sleep conundrum.

Step one to solving this mystery has been sleeping on CozyPure’s bestselling LaNoodle pillow. While I can’t speak to the science of what tiny, little latex noodles masterfully stuffed in an organic casing should do for helping you sleep, but I feel tremendous after sleeping on one of these organic gems.

My neck pain has reduced greatly, as the LaNoodle cradles my rather bulbous head and shoulders in a way that makes drifting off to sleep a much less daunting task. With each passing night of sleeping on the LaNoodle pillow, I value sleep a bit more. And that is huge for me.
I don’t think any other product could’ve affected that change in me.

Sleeping on my new LaNoodle pillow, I begin to think maybe my sleep woes are more a case of I’ve been doing it, but I haven’t been doing it with the right tools. I guess it’s the equivalent of eating your farm fresh peas with a fork with only one tine. You can get it done but it probably could be done better with a spoon. So I’m thrilled I turned in my old pillow for a CozyPure LaNoodle pillow. It has opened the door to the school of healthy sleep. I can’t wait to see what CozyPure’s entire sleep system has to teach this country boy.

CozyPure Cuddle-Up Club Slumber Party

Loyal customers gather to learn more about how organic comfort is made fresh daily at CozyPure.

CozyPure has been in business for 25 years. In that time, it has gained quite a following of loyal customers across the country. With a product so durable, sustainable and amazingly comfortable, a lot of praise has been offered from our customers. Being such informed consumers, many CozyPure customers are curious how organic comfort is made fresh daily, right here in the CozyPure workshop in Norfolk, Virginia.

_MG_1144_editedSlumber party guests, from left to right, Gaye Pietrocola, Michelle Germano, Cindy Thebaud, and Cindy Lee Hall learn about the making of CozyPure comforters and toppers in the workshop. Hahn, right, explains how the skilled artisans stitch, tuft and sew CozyPure products.

So, to say thank you to a few of our local customers and to demystify the CozyPure process, we hosted our first Slumber Party. On a cool evening on Oct. 8, 2015, guests were treated to an evening of refreshments, fun and an intimate look at the CozyPure organic bed making process.

slumber-party1

Over the course of the evening, our guests shared their stories of how they arrived at selecting their CozyPure sleep system. Many had tried so many others before coming to CozyPure. Guest Heather Mayes, after having purchased a mattress from another manufacturer, said her previous mattress, felt uncomfortable, “like sleeping on a marshmallow.” Since getting her CozyPure organic sleep system a few months ago, Heather has enjoyed more restful sleep in total comfort.

slumber-party3

Another guest, Gaye Pietrocola, has been a CozyPure organic bed owner for years. Among the other health benefits of sleeping on her CozyPure mattress, she and her husband Greg really appreciate the ease of being able to adjust the firmness of their mattress anytime they need to. “We just unzip it and adjust it,” she said, “it’s fun.”

IMG_3544

As CozyPure owner Cheryl Hahn guided the excited guests through the workshop, they got a chance to see the entire process before their eyes. Having nothing to hide in the CozyPure bed making process, guests got to see and feel the materials—organic cotton, therapeutic wool, and natural organic latex. Hahn explained that the milk of the rubber tree is slowly extracted from thousands of rubber trees on the plantations of Sri Lanka, each mattress requiring roughly 2,500 teaspoons of pure rubber milk to make one mattress. She also explained to intrigued guests how the milk is then prepared and baked in a mold, kind of like your favorite cake. No filler. No foams. No lies. Just pure organic comfort.

_MG_1139

Guests also got to feel the soft and luxurious LaNoodles found in CozyPure’s best selling LaNoodle pillows that are amazingly comfortable, resilient and sustainable.

At the conclusion of the first CozyPure Cuddle Up Club Slumber Party, guests played pin the tail on the lamb. The winner, Cindy Lee Hall, received a new CozyPure Wool Euro Pillow. Each guest also received gift bags with travel-size LaNoodle Pillows and other goodies.

IMG_3575

More importantly, what we at CozyPure hope our Slumber Party guests and our everyday customers walk away with is an understanding that CozyPure is genuinely committed to providing its customers with a quality handmade organic product, free of toxins and harmful chemicals. There are no secrets or hidden ingredients in the organic mattresses and bedding at CozyPure. We work very hard to maintain a “Farm-to-Bed” freshness and purity in all our CozyPure products. We invite every one to come see what goes on in our workshop at 2308 Granby Street in Norfolk, VA. We are always willing to give you a tour of our workshop so you can see the organic magic happen for yourself.

And who knows? Once you purchase your CozyPure organic sleep system, we may see you at our next Slumber Party. Don’t forget your PJs!

A beautiful face starts with good bone structure. So, even though the walls and floors of what is now the CozyPure showroom were a bit dingy and misused over the years, her bone structure was still quite good. And just like other areas in the building, Maggie May’s showroom needed some TLC ASAP.
