How Safe Is Your Mattress?

We don’t use PBDE’s or other chemicals, so. . . you may wonder how we can offer these chemical-free mattresses without comprising fire safety, and that’s definitely something you need to consider when purchasing a mattress free of chemical flame retardants. We can’t speak for every natural mattress manufacturer, but in our case, we’ve carefully designed our mattresses using our CozyPure wool, layered or quilted in the correct areas, so our beds have passed the requirements to meet California’s stringent TB603 “Open-Flame” law, passed in 2005. Even though this is not a federal law, it is only a matter of time before the nation adopts the same requirements, so we feel we’re ahead of the game. Some people are foolish enough to believe that since they don’t smoke in bed, it doesn’t matter if their bed is protected with fire retardants. The truth is, most fires don’t start from burning cigarettes anymore; the more likely source is small open flame fires — cooking, heating, or accidents with matches or candles. If the fire starts in (or moves to) the bedroom, the mattress is one of the most vulnerable items to catch fire. Synthetic mattresses, treated with fire-retardant chemicals, will burn slowly, however the fumes are highly toxic and extremely dangerous, plus the intense melting can cause severe burns. Natural mattresses that are not properly constructed with wool or treated with fire-retardant chemicals, will easily ignite. On the other hand, a natural mattress like CozyPure, manufactured correctly to utilize the right amount of wool, in specific areas of the bed, will burn slowly without combustion, melting, or toxic fumes. So, be sure your natural mattress is constructed properly, and the manufacturer has tested for flammability — play it safe!

How to make a bed

Europeans are often shocked to see a bed made-up first thing in the morning. It is standard practice in Western Europe to let the bed *breathe* in the morning. The comforter is turned back to allow body moisture and odors to escape from the mattress via air circulation.

What are PBDEs anyway?

Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers, or PBDEs, are chemical additives that reduce the flammability of everyday items, such as computer casings, carpet pads, cushions and mattresses. In recent years, scientists have discovered that:

  • PBDEs leach out of the items to which they were added and enter the environment. PBDEs are showing up in the air, soil and sediment, and are building up in animals throughout the food chain.
  • PBDEs travel great distances and have been detected in remote regions, turning up even in the bodies of polar bears in the Arctic. PBDEs are being found in everything from meat and dairy products to fruits and vegetables as well as indoor air and household dust. And because some PBDEs don’t break down easily, the levels of PBDEs in the environment are steadily rising.
  • In lab tests with rodents, some PBDEs have been linked to problems in brain development and thyroid hormones. Most of these problems stem from pre-natal exposure and exposure soon after birth. The health effects appear to be permanent.
  • PBDE levels in humans are about 10 to 100 times higher in the U.S., the world’s largest producer and consumer of PBDEs, than in Europe. Scientists say North American levels appear to be rising at an exponential rate, doubling every two to five years, while countries that have banned their use have seen levels decrease.
  • U.S. levels of PBDEs are rising. Studies have found them in human blood, fat and breast milk. Breast-feeding appears to overcome some of the effects of harmful chemicals and remains the healthiest way to feed babies.

    Because dust mites like cotton…

We’ve designed a quilted coverlet made from organic cotton! YIPPEE. It has just enough batting for warmth, quilted tight on organic cotton ticking to prevent bunching. And best of all? It’s machine washable. For years, other companies would offer organic cotton comforters, which can’t be washed, and we held strong in our belief to not offer this item since dust mites love cotton, therefore, it has to be washed. An unwashable comforter didn’t make sense (sure we could make money selling it – but we knew it wasn’t a good product – and we just don’t do that). We were so happy when our final prototype of this design proved well, test after test. And now it’s available to you. Organic cotton quilted coverlet that’s machine wash and dry. Another first… designed and introduced by CozyPure. Enjoy!
