Greening your bedroom

Since we spend a third to half our lives in our bedrooms or personal space, it makes good sense to make it as healthy as possible. Sleep deprivation has been proven to lead to number of health problems such as high blood pressure. The body needs sleep to replenish the damage of the day can do.

Making your bedroom eco-friendly consists of making many little changes to the decor of the room. This includes getting organic bedding, made with natural cotton, wool and latex, restored furniture, “green” paint, wood floors, natural fiber rugs, energy-efficient light bulbs, a dimmer switch and cotton pajamas. Surrounding yourself with natural fibers, pieces of furniture without glue or chemicals and paints with low- or no-volatile organic compounds (or VOCs) and organic cotton pajamas is a great way to keep your bedroom free of indoor pollution. Small steps like these help ensure that you are getting the most of your sleep experience.

Back Pain and Stress

We had a customer call about back pain which started just a few weeks after getting our mattress. He was doing fine, sleeping pretty well, but then began to feel tightness in his lower back. Since the mattress was fairly new to him, just two weeks, he assumed it was a comfort issue and called to find out if he needed something firmer or softer.

After a series of questions, we discovered that he was dealing with a lot of emotional distress (he broke down on the phone while talking). His wife had passed away within the past year, he was taking care of his eldery father, his son was diagnosed with a chronic illness, and more recently, was laid off from his job. Coincidentally, it was only a few days after he lost his job when he started to experience his back pain. Because he was dealing with so many different stress issues, the layoff was his “peak”, or rather when his “cup runneth over”, in a not so very good way.

Having a problem here and there is a part of everyday life, but when we have an avalanche of issues hit us all at once it can be quite overwhelming. The stress we tend to hold in our bodies during hard times usually manifests in our back because we unconsciously tense those muscles, which in turn causes pain. If you recently purchased a new mattress, like our customer, it’s only natural to assume that’s the cause. But before you make any major changes to the comfort of your sleep system, be sure to address any emotional stress you are experiencing, because no matter how comfortable your mattress is, you’ll still have the back pain until you deal with the stress. It’s a terrible cycle of tension that won’t be relieved until you are able to change the circumstances of your anxiety, or at least get it under manageable control.

Experts advise we should watch our posture when we have high anxiety since we tend to slouch, or torque our bodies in unnatural positions while sitting, which can contribute to back pain. Massage and stretching is also important to relieve muscle tension. However, those things only help with the physical discomforts, and you need to address the underlying cause of the anxiety and find what works for you to manage your emotional stress. Yoga, dance, music, support from family and friends, partaking in a hobby you enjoy, being pro-active and making a list to combat issues… these are just a few of the things that can assist you to focus on feeling better mentally, which in turn may help reduce your anxiety-related back pain.

Back to our customer… after he was able to “get things off his chest” while talking to us, he apologized and was embarrassed, but he also admitted to already feeling a little better. Since we’re in the sleep industry we were able to make him aware of how stress can deeply affect the quality of sleep, and greatly contribute to discomfort. He agreed it made sense, that he’d put off dealing with the problems which were affecting his life, and so he decided he would first try to manage his anxiety better then call us in a few weeks with an update.

After a month, he hadn’t called back, so we reached out to him to find out how the mattress was working out. We’re happy to report that within the time period of our first call, and the followup call, he was able to tackle a lot of his issues and get them under control. He hadn’t contacted us because he was sleeping so well, he didn’t even think about it anymore, and just simply forgot he was suppose to call us back!

Moral of the story: If you’re experiencing back pain when you’re sleeping, think about what’s going on in your life. If there’s additional anxiety, you should first look at ways to resolve your stress before making any major changes to your sleep system, which could very well be unnecessary.

Be happy…. sleep happy!

Do you really need a showroom to test a mattress?

Buying a mattress without trying it first can be overwhelming and lead to anxiety and apprehension. But when you really think about it, going to a store and testing a few beds for 30 minutes or so really doesn’t give you a true idea of how you’ll like sleeping on it every night. As time goes by, you may realize you want something a little firmer or softer. Overall, if you’re not happy with a mattress purchase it ultimately comes down to the comfort, not the mattress itself.

CozyPure mattresses have zippers so you can access the inner components and “tweak” to your liking, whether it’s 6 months or 6 years later. In addition to that feature, all mattresses have reverse-flip comfort so the bed is a little firmer on the other side, meaning right out of the box you have two firmness options. Need it softer? We have top-of-bed accessories such as toppers, or depending on the model you choose, you can also add softer latex layers inside the mattress itself… or both!

Our team is ready to help you if you should ever need to modify the comfort of your bed. Because our mattresses are built with SOLID natural latex from top to bottom and edge to edge (no foams or coils to break down), a CozyPure mattress can last for decades with proper care. Over that time your comfort needs may change, so it’s great to have options to adjust and customize to your liking as you age.

We designed our mattresses to help you feel more confident in purchasing a mattress without trying it first, because once you sleep on a CozyPure, we can work with you should you need to change anything at any time. Our most popular customizable mattress is the 10″ Natural Comfort Kiss, which features the most options.

Read more about the benefits of a CozyPure mattress here. Give us a call at 800-229-7571 or visit our website to learn more. If you’re in the Hampton Roads area, we have a showroom too and would love to see you… so please stop by, say HI and have a test rest on our beds at 2308 Granby Street, Norfolk, VA

Sleep Organic

Are you ready to SLEEP ORGANIC?

Sleep is so much more than just a great mattress… it’s about creating a healthy sanctuary where you can retreat and sleep deep every night. At CozyPure, we’ve got you covered from head to toe with natural or GOLS organic latex mattresses and all the organic bedding goodies to cuddle-up and sleep organic.

SUSTAINABLE. RENEWABLE. NATURAL.
sleep organic the way nature intended

sleep organic

What does it mean to “sleep organic”?
So many conventional mattresses and bedding found in traditional stores, as well as online bed-in-a-box websites, are made from chemical-based foams, polyesters, and other synthetic blends, with additional fire retardants added. When you “sleep organic” the mattresses and bedding are made with organic and natural materials from nature’s ingredients, without the use of harmful toxins or chemicals.

Here at CozyPure, we’ve been pioneers in the industry, offering organic home and sleep products since 1991, way before other companies jumped on the trend (see tomorrowsworld.com, our original name and flagship catalog). With more than 25 years under our belt, we can provide you with the experience, knowledge, service and quality you should expect when you purchase a new sleep system, especially if you’re looking for natural and organic options.

“Sleep organic” is a generic term used often in the industry to describe organic sleep products. Back in spring of 2014, the dot.organic domains became available, so of course we purchased the website sleep.organic as an opportunity to continue our efforts to showcase our organic sleep products. We were the first company in America to offer a large selection of organic bedding, shipped nationally, direct to the consumer for over two decades, so it made sense for us to secure our position in the market as manufacturers that help customers sleep organic with our organic sleep products!

We have everything from mattresses to pillows, comforters, blankets, linens, and baby items. And if you’re not quite ready for a mattress, we have toppers you can add on your existing bed.

So if you’re ready to sleep organic, give us a call at 800-229-7571 or visit our sleep.organic website to learn more!

Oxymoron: Summer Cold

Summer time is soon upon us, so we thought we’d post this again (originally published June 2014). Enjoy the warmer weather, but sleep well and rest if you catch a summer cold!
======================================================

We have all suffered through it: The Common Cold, and yet, why is it that still there is no cure for the aching and stiffness of one’s body? The best that we can do is stay in bed all day and drink juice and sleep and watch our favorite T.V. shows or read our favorite books and magazines. However, that is not good enough for a lot of us, especially after the second day or so of lying in bed. Many of us have to get back to work, get back to school, return to our everyday duties so that we can resume our lives and hopefully retire on a beach some day – and from there we’ll figure out what to do with the rest of our lives once we get bored doing even that. So, what do we do? We resume our lives and our cold does not get any better. In the Winter, if treated the right way, a cold might be gone within a couple of days to a week, with lingering symptoms for the next month or so.

organic-cotton-Heirloom-bed-63844_186x186

A summer cold can be very different. Many of us will want to go outside in the nice summer heat, which is great, you know, soaking up that Vitamin D while sipping on a cup of orange juice and falling asleep in the sun perhaps; however, research shows that transitioning from indoors to outdoors might want to be kept to a minimum because the conversion from hot air to cold air can dry the protective mucus lining in the nose, so be careful about air conditioners. Also, as we all know, the key to fighting any cold is rest, just sitting back and letting your body work out the wonders. But, as we all know, Summer tends to be a very busy season. There are so many social things going on, so many beach days that you don’t want to miss, and of course staying in beach body condition is a full time job to begin with. So what are we supposed to do when we get sick> Miss out on all of the fun summer activities that we won’t see for a whole year after Summer has ended? Think of all the Barbeques that you will miss if you take a whole week off for your health!

Well, you can always hide your symptoms by chasing a musinex with cough syrup, but in the end we have to face the facts that the symptoms can not be buried for long and eventually we have to face the ugly truth that modern medicine can’t even defeat the common cold. Still, there is one thing that one can do, every night for a week. That’s right, you guessed it: assure that you are getting the proper rest. Rest is the key to recovery and although we can’t take a whole week off if we want to save up our vacation days, we also can make sure that so long as we are getting a full night’s sleep every night until we are better, then the rest of the Summer will be much, much more enjoyable, and memorable, when we aren’t pumped with Day-Quill.

CozyPure can assure your proper Summer rest with our variety of inviting Organic Latex Mattress‘ and pillows and blankets, etc.. Our products are naturally dust-mite resistant so that your not inhaling debris as you sleep so long as you know how to wash your sheets. Our organic cotton and wool products are not drizzled with petroleum and our sheets not doused in formaldehyde, so there are no unwanted, uninvited, uncalled for chemicals to interfere with your body chemistry.

Of course, you can sweat out a summer cold in the heat of the sun, in a sauna or a steam room. Light exercise is not prohibited for those trying to stay in shape for the Fourth of July; however, workouts that are too intense can deplete the body of energy needed to fight the disease. Remember, though, sleep – sleep – sleep! Get well and enjoy your Summer!

Adding Some Earth to the Bedroom with Plants

Sleep is a necessity of life. It is a staple in assuring well-being and good health. If you are not getting a restful nights sleep then you are at risk of sleep deprivation and deficiency. These are unhealthy sleep habits that can affect every part of your life, extending beyond the bedroom. There are many chronic problems related to sleep deficiency, including heart disease, high blood pressure, depression, stroke, and diabetes. Sleep disorders are a chronic epidemic in America, and the damages can be as instantaneous as a car accident from a delayed reaction, to an array of harmful health problems and habits developed over time.

We here at CozyPure want to help America sleep better. We are dedicated to helping you find the right bed and bedding to fulfill your organic comfort needs, but also to provide other resources and information on getting a healthy and benefiting slumber. In lieu of Earth Day, we want to share with you the many resources our own Mother Earth provides that can help you in reaching a soothing slumber.

We partake in the resources given by nature in our products, but also in our showroom where many plants and benefiting foliage has been strategically arranged to offer an aesthetic appeal and to assist in the soothing effects of calming and seducing sleep. We have composited a list of twelve benefiting plants that can aid in sleep. These are plants that NASA recommends in enhancing air quality of living space. It is recommended, that 15 to 18 plants such as these should be located in an 1800 square foot area to provide the best results in improving air quality and overall experience. Poor air quality can lead to an array of health issues, including asthma, allergies, inflammation, and even cancer, with that in mind, adding a plant or two to the bedroom seems to be more than necessary in providing a safer sleep environment. Here are twelve air-quality improving plants, recognized to be benefiting to the restless sleeper:

  1. Jasmine, Jasminum: Jasmine is a vining plant, that grows naturally in warmer climates, but can be kept indoors where it can receive plenty of natural sunlight. Jasmine has been known to reduce anxiety, while the smell can help improve sleep and alertness.
  2. Lavender, Lavindula: Lavender is diffused into many newborn products and products for new moms because of its stress reducing properties. Lavender has been recognized to reduce stress and anxiety, slow heart rate, and lower blood pressure. All of which can help set the stage (or bedroom) for a better nights rest.
  3. Rosemary, Rosemarinus Officinalis: Rosemary works hard to improve the air quality around with its immune boosting qualities and blood flow stimulation. It is has also been shown to boost memory levels by 75 percent.
  4. Aloe Vera, Aloe Barbadensis Miller: This plant is rated by NASA as the number one in oxygen generating and air improving. More oxygen can help you get to sleep better and stay there. The Aloe Vera plant offers a topical ointment inside its foliage that can soothe burns, rashes, and skin abrasions.
  5. English Ivy, Hedera Helix: This ivy is an amazing addition to any plant of garden. It has been shown to reduce up to 94% of airborne mold in a matter of hours. This aids in reducing allergies and lung irritation.
  6. Snake Plant, Mother- In- Laws Tongue, Sansevieria Trifasciata: This is a plant that many have exclaimed is impossible to kill. It filters out many household toxins from the air including formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, and benzene. It has also been recognized to aid in preventing eye irritations, respiratory problems, and headaches, while increasing energy levels.
  7. Gardenia, Gardenia jasminoides : The gardenia is a bit trickier to care for, needing to be in bright room without direct sunlight, but is known to aid in relieving anxiety and promoting sleep.
  8. Valerian, Valeriana officialis : This is a perennial flowering plant with a sweet scent that needs a minimum of 6 full hours of sun daily. Valerian is one of the oldest and most studied plants that aid in curing sleep disorders like insomnia.
  9. Peace Lily, Spathiphyllum wallisii : The Peace Lily is rated as one of NASA’s super plants as it filter toxins from the air and can boost humidity by 5 percent. This suppresses airborne allergies and offers relief from allergens. This plant captures mold spores from the air and circulates them to the roots for food.
  10. Bamboo Palm, or Reed Palm, Chamaedorea erumpens : This is beautiful plant that can grow up to 6 feet tall and offers air purification along with a wonderful aroma.
  11. Gerbera Daisies, Gerbera jamesonii : These are cheery flowers that release oxygen at night and are often recommended for the home in cases of sleep apnea and severe allergies. However, these plants need a lot of attention for they are often prone to fungal diseases.
  12. Golden Pothos, Scindapsus aures : This plant has marbled- heart shaped leaves that are incredibly helpful in purifying the air. It is just important to note that the leaves may also be considered mildly toxic to children and pets.

Cuddling up with the Critters on National Pet Day

Some of CozyPure’s pampered pets lounge with Hans on the Eco Terra Organic Sofa-Day Bed on site.

April 11th is National Pet Day and CozyPure supports your commitment to your critters.

Pets are family, and we would not offer the entire family sleep support if we did not mean it. There are many reasons pets are known to benefit the health and quality of life in people, which may be why our owner allows our pets to come to work with us. However, sleeping with our pets, or allowing them to sleep with us, is something more of us are guilty for than not. The American Pet Product Association ran a survey and found that nearly half of dog owners allow their fur-baby to sleep with them at night. It was also found that 62 percent of house cats sleep with their owners and that 13 percent of them sleep with the children. In another study conducted by the Mayo Clinic on sleep disorders, half of the patients in the study admitted to sleeping with their pet and 53% of those patients recognized that their pet disturbed them while sleeping. Disruptive sleep is not restful sleep, but there are those who have shown to sleep easier and more comfortable sharing their slumber space. Pets, like partners, can provide a calm, warm body to regulate our own against and therefore making it easier to fall asleep at night. Those with fibromyalgia and other chronic pains that respond to heat have found that their pets warm bodies act like a heating pad to those sore spots. There is a comforting sense of security that many pet owners remark as the reason for keeping the critter in the bedroom at night. Whether it comes from knowing that they have an alert system near if any intrusions occur or if the security embeds in the companionship of critter and owner is unclear. It has been mentioned that the soothing purrs of a cat or the heavy heart thumps of a pup have aided those with insomnia and other sleep disorders to a peaceful sleep. The body responds significantly to the “petting” of an animal, the cortisol (stress hormone) levels of the human body lowers, while the serotonin (feel-good chemicals) and oxytocin (cuddle chemicals) increase. This release of serotonin and oxytocin relax the body, enhance psychological stability, and provide an excellent mood to drift into sweet dreamland.

Sharing your bed space with your pet is not for everyone. Those who suffer from allergies and asthma should not allow their pet to sleep with them, and preferably should not allow them to sleep in the same room as them. It is good to give the body a rest from breathing in irritating allergens and dander when so detrimentally affected by it. Dogs can become honorary, portraying aggression and dominance issues, when they feel they have certain ‘rights’ to your sleep space. Breaking them of this habit can take time and it is recommended by Pet M.D that owners do not give their dog the freedom of sleeping in the bed on their own accord. Instead, dogs should be taught to ask permission, or wait to be invited to the bed (territory) and then be directed to where to lay on the bed. This allows the pet to recognize the space as a shared space that is dominated by their owner, and their privileges in the bed will be more appreciated and less entitled. Though, if your dog tries to sleep with you, take it as a compliment. Internationally recognized dog trainer, Victoria Stilwell, says, “Dogs only sleep with people or dogs they trust.” So if your waggy-tailed critter wants to cozy down with you, relax in knowing you have created a bond. If you have a cat and question the fuzzy feline’s love for you, experts say that the kitties slow blinks are your sign of approval. People can return the love with a long gaze and slow blink to reciprocate the sign of loving approval. According to cat behaviorist, the calm blink works on house cats, feral cats, and wild felines.

We want you and your furry friends to sleep comfortably and confident in knowing that your companion is as cozy as you. This is why we had to extend our product line from organic bedding made for humans” to CozyPure comfort for your pets too. So whether your fur baby sleeps with you, you are attempting to change their sleep space, or you are a soon-to-be pet parent we have quality organic comfort for you to tuck them in.

‘Sunshine’ is shown, posing on the large Orthopedic Pet Bed, made by the CozyPure professionals.
