Oxymoron: Summer Cold

We have all suffered through it: The Common Cold, and yet, why is it that still there is no cure for the aching and stiffness of one’s body? The best that we can do is stay in bed all day and drink juice and sleep and watch our favorite T.V. shows or read our favorite books and magazines. However, that is not good enough for a lot of us, especially after the second day or so of lying in bed. Many of us have to get back to work, get back to school, return to our everyday duties so that we can resume our lives and hopefully retire on a beach some day – and from there we’ll figure out what to do with the rest of our lives once we get bored doing even that. So, what do we do? We resume our lives and our cold does not get any better. In the Winter, if treated the right way, a cold might be gone within a couple of days to a week, with lingering symptoms for the next month or so.

A summer cold can be very different. Many of us will want to go outside in the nice summer heat, which is great, you know, soaking up that Vitamin D while sipping on a cup of orange juice and falling asleep in the sun perhaps; however, research shows that transitioning from indoors to outdoors might want to be kept to a minimum because the conversion from hot air to cold air can dry the protective mucus lining in the nose, so be careful about air conditioners. Also, as we all know, the key to fighting any cold is rest, just sitting back and letting your body work out the wonders. But, as we all know, Summer tends to be a very busy season. There are so many social things going on, so many beach days that you don’t want to miss, and of course staying in beach body condition is a full time job to begin with. So what are we supposed to do when we get sick> Miss out on all of the fun summer activities that we won’t see for a whole year after Summer has ended? Think of all the Barbeques that you will miss if you take a whole week off for your health!

Well, you can always hide your symptoms by chasing a musinex with cough syrup, but in the end we have to face the facts that the symptoms can not be buried for long and eventually we have to face the ugly truth that modern medicine can’t even defeat the common cold. Still, there is one thing that one can do, every night for a week. That’s right, you guessed it: assure that you are getting the proper rest. Rest is the key to recovery and although we can’t take a whole week off if we want to save up our vacation days, we also can make sure that so long as we are getting a full night’s sleep every night until we are better, then the rest of the Summer will be much, much more enjoyable, and memorable, when we aren’t pumped with Day-Quill.

CozyPure can assure your proper Summer rest with our variety of inviting Organic Latex Mattress‘ and pillows and blankets, etc.. Our products are naturally dust-mite resistant so that your not inhaling debris as you sleep so long as you know how to wash your sheets. Our organic cotton and wool products are not drizzled with petroleum and our sheets not doused in formaldehyde, so there are no unwanted, uninvited, uncalled for chemicals to interfere with your body chemistry.

Of course, you can sweat out a summer cold in the heat of the sun, in a sauna or a steam room. Light exercise is not prohibited for those trying to stay in shape for the Fourth of July; however, workouts that are too intense can deplete the body of energy needed to fight the disease. Remember, though, sleep – sleep – sleep! Get well and enjoy your Summer!

Comforter Vs. Bedspread

When trying to determine whether you would like to buy a bedspread or a comforter, it might be a good decision to leave style out of the question. If you don’t like how a comforter looks compared to a bedspread, choose a duvet cover that you can slip over the comforter so that you can enjoy how it looks and how it feels. Bedspreads can end up being scratchy and uncomfortable, and typically do not provide the same kind of insulation as a comforter will.

Also, just because you live in a warmer climate, this does not mean that a comforter is not a worthy asset – after all, we never know when the next ice age could happen… Anyways, wool comforters tend to breathe with ones body, allowing for you to enjoy your rest in no matter what climate you are in. Sure, if its 100 degrees and unimaginably humid and your air conditioning just HAD to break that night, a wool comfortable might not be the best idea. But there is no harm in having a comforter handy for those chilly nights. The best part about natural wool comforters made with organic cotton is that they aren’t scratchy or uncomfortable on one’s skin. You can sleep in the nude and it will still be oh-so soft on you. Personally, I myself still use my comforter in the hot summer months, but hey, that could be just me!

Some people worry about their blankets not being able to cover their entire mattress and then some. Some people want their bedspread or comforter to flow all the way down to the floor. I wonder why people want this, though. When your sheets and such touch the floor they most likely will pick up dust and other debris from your floor. Nobody should want to sleep in a mess of dust and dirt, this is the twenty-first century. And again, if it comes back to being a style thing, why not purchase a bed skirt. That way you can use the bed skirt to cover up whatever ungodly mess that you might be trying to hide underneath of your mattress, while also being able to use whatever blanket that you choose, no matter what length it may be.

In conclusion, bedspreads typically are strictly for the use of aesthetics; however, some people do enjoy the use of these items as blankets. There are other options, though, if you definitely DO NOT want to purchase a comforter. Sheets and other various cotton and sateen blankets can be made to fit your style. Typically, sheets won’t have a person suffering through the night in a hot sweat no matter how hot it is and they provide that layer of safety that some people need to feel in order to fall asleep. If you’re still sweating through the night perhaps you need to see a specialist.

Its Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas!

Last weekend there was a chill in the air as my friends and I went for a walk through downtown Ghent, the sun had just set and it was the perfect time to get a glimpse of the houses decorated in beautiful Christmas lights and other various decorations. I remember the night clearly because I was freezing. What happened shortly after going outside was that my friend was ‘cold’, although layered with long sleeves, a new scarf, and a jacket, and so me, being the kind person that I am, offered up my own coat to her and took on the suffering that came with thirty degree weather with nothing but a light button up shirt on.

My coat is a comfortable one of the cotton genre, I love it very much for it provides me much comfort in the cold months. Upon putting on my coat, my friend exclaimed “Wow, this coat is warm!” as if that was not already expected. It wasn’t until after this that I saw the polyester rag that she was wearing as a jacket that posed as something that might keep her warm. Sure, her tunic looked nice, but it didn’t seem to provide her with the necessary comfort needed for the cold months. I replied briskly, “What did you expect? I don’t shop cheap!” and yet, I had purchased the comfortable article of clothing from a local thrift store for about five dollars. However, this price did not effect the quality of the coat and to this day I stay wrapped up in it.

The reason I reflect on this particular occasion is to emphasize the importance of quality clothing, especially during the long, chilly months of the winter. Without these clothes, perhaps you might drive around a neighborhood in order to appreciate the decorations, or not do anything of that matter at all, and what fun would that be? Finding clothes that are stylish and comforting AND organic can be as simple as stopping into a thrift store and looking around until you find that perfect match, and believe me, where there is a thrift store there is an old wool sweater to fit everyone’s needs, believe me, I have twelve of them.

You don’t want to drive around when you can just as easily walk and incorporate a small dose of fitness into whatever your daily routine may be. You can eliminate exhaust fumes and experience the rush of cold air blowing across your cheeks and jack frost nipping at your nose when you make the simple choice to walk around the block to pick up your holiday eggnog from the market. However, once inside, don’t forget to cozy up next to the warm fire with an engrossing book or watch a classic Christmas film (my favorite is ‘The Year Without A Santa Clause“) with the rest of the family while bundled up under a crisp cotton blanket or wool comforter. With items like this you can make the best of your time inside off the house, while trimming those heating bills down a little bit.

Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire

Another thing that makes the cold air bearable are my wool socks which I keep rolled up to my knees at nearly all times of the day, whenever I am wearing them, that is. Cotton socks do the trick too, but nothing compares to my wool ones, or a quiet evening alone (for those who get the reference ;P). About a month ago I went on a camping trip with some friends, we spent the night on the beach and man was it COLD outside. The following day I was actually surprised that most of us had made it out alive, though not without any troubles along the way. One way that I kept myself from becoming a block of ice was by not messing with the wool socks that covered my legs, I simply placed them on my legs, pulled them up my calves and let them do the rest of the work. Surprisingly, I stayed warmer than most of the others in our troop because of this (I was also wearing my thrift store jacket and about three layers of shirts.)

I guess what I’m trying to say is that you should not let the weather take a toll on the activities that you love to do. If you want to go out for a stroll through the park then do it! Just make sure that you are bundled up and prepared before making the venture outside. If you feel the need to go camping then who cares what anybody says about the snow that is supposed to hit the ground that evening, go for it! Put on some wool socks, a pair of comfortable hiking boots, layer up those shirts, package yourself away into a pair of long johns, build you fire and enjoy the night! The winter will be gone quicker than you realize, so make the best of it and do your own thing.
