PIONEERING LOCAL BUSINESS AHEAD OF NEW LEGISLATION

Norfolk, VA – CozyPure, makers of organic mattresses and bedding, applauds President Obama for signing the Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act into law earlier this week. The law, which updates the Toxic Substances Control Act of 1976, will do a better job of reviewing chemicals currently in the products Americans buy for their homes as well as regulating new chemicals before they are introduced to consumers.

CozyPure is pleased to announce that this new law will not affect their operations. “We’ve been making mattresses without the use of any harmful or proprietary chemicals for the past 25 years,” says CozyPure’s owner, Cheryl Hahn, “the passing of this act is a great achievement, people deserve to know what chemicals are hiding in their household.”

When the original law was passed there were already 62,000 chemicals on the market but the restraints placed on the EPA made it nearly impossible to ban them. In fact, due to proprietary trade secrets only five of the 62,000 chemicals have been banned in the 40 years since the law’s initiation.

“Folks should have the confidence to know the laundry detergent we buy isn’t going to make us sick, the mattress our babies sleep on isn’t going to harm them,” Obama said. “For the first time in our history, we’ll actually be able to regulate chemicals effectively. And we’re doing it in the same, overwhelmingly bipartisan fashion,” the president said.

The new bill emulates the stance that CozyPure has always taken on the products they manufacture and sell to consumers made only from natural ingredients such as rubbermilk, wool and organic cotton versus similar mainstream products made from plasticized polyurethane foams and undisclosed, potentially toxic chemicals often coated in flame retardants.

In 2007 a huge milestone was reached when PBDEs, a widely used set of toxic flame retardants, were finally phased out. According to an EPA report in August 2015, the new substitute chemicals are now also cause for concern. This new legislation should hopefully eliminate the instances where one harmful chemical is replaced with another.

Consumers aware of the potential dangers lurking in mattresses have sought-out organic alternatives. Norfolk resident Michelle Germano, a victim of the devastating toxic chemicals found in Chinese drywall, had to replace everything in her home and contacted CozyPure for her entire sleep system. “I’ve been a customer since 2009 and recommend CozyPure to all my friends. I’m thrilled we have a local company that makes products without depending on harmful ingredients.”

CozyPure’s wool comforter: A lesson in temperature regulation

Working at CozyPure has caused me to examine my sleeping habits. And I’ve discovered something about myself…I’m a cover kicker. For those who aren’t aware of this type of sleeper, it’s when you’re constantly kicking the covers off and searching for them over and over again in the night. I just never seem to be able to find that perfect temperature to maintain REM sleep.

TroyLaNoodle
I may never be much of a heavy sleeper, but I need the sleep I get to mean something positive for my health.

So, I began researching temperature regulation and its effect on a healthy night’s sleep. The facts about this subject were eye-opening. What I have learned is that us endotherms have two zones to regulate during sleep. These two zones are the core temperature and the shell temperature. Now, the brain does the work when it comes to the core temperature. Our hypothamalus regulates the temperature in our core, i.e. the abdominal, thoracic, and cranial cavities, which contain the vital organs. It is our shell temperature that is most affected by external temperature. So, if the room temperature isn’t conducive to proper shell temperature regulation, the result can be a night of pulling the covers on and off, never quit achieving that precious REM sleep we all need for healthy living.

Then I considered my background when it comes to external temperature. My dear departed mother simply could not stand warm weather. To give you an idea, we had a particularly bitter winter with very low temperatures when I was a child. Our heat had given out for a few days. We were all bundled in sweats and blankets. My mother was dressed like it was mid-summer in Florida. Over time, my body became conditioned to being in a pretty chilly indoor environment. I’ve come to prefer a very cool bedroom. Heavy blankets and comforters simply haven’t worked for me.

So, getting the wool comforter from CozyPure and using it for the first time, I was definitely skeptical. The comforter is soft, yet substantial to the touch, at least seemingly more substantial than someone like me could handle. Before I even settled in for my first nap with the comforter, my first thought was that this was going to have me sweating inside of a half-hour period. But as I settled in under the CozyPure comforter, I was eventually given exposure to proper temperature regulation during sleep. I had achieved that level of comfort where you can’t determine where your body ends and the comforter begins. And as for sweating…not a drop. I remained cool and relaxed for the duration of my nap. It’s amazing how nature has the solutions to problems we create in our lives. I may never be much of a heavy sleeper, but I need the sleep I get to mean something positive for my health. Thanks to the CozyPure wool comforter, I can keep my shell temperature just where it needs to be for a healthy restful sleep.

January 6 is National Cuddle Up Day and we’re embracing it at CozyPure. After all, who better to celebrate this nationwide day of cuddling than makers of organic mattresses and bedding? So it’s official, CozyPure declares National Cuddle Up Day as it’s holiday.

Some may wonder why the nation would adopt a holiday devoted to such a seemingly inconsequential activity like cuddling. But, there is so much more to a good cuddle than we realize. There are many physical and emotional benefits to cuddling. When cuddling, the body releases oxytocin, the feel-good hormone, endorphins, the chemical most experience after exercise, and dopamine, the hormone that enhances sexual desire. These chemical and hormonal releases have been shown to help lower blood pressure, chances of heart disease and aleviate anxiety. That’s right, you get all that from just cuddling up with a loved one.

To celebrate National Cuddle Up Day on Jan. 6, CozyPure is hosting contests on Facebook and Instagram.

CozyPure Cuddle-Up Club Slumber Party

Loyal customers gather to learn more about how organic comfort is made fresh daily at CozyPure.

CozyPure has been in business for 25 years. In that time, it has gained quite a following of loyal customers across the country. With a product so durable, sustainable and amazingly comfortable, a lot of praise has been offered from our customers. Being such informed consumers, many CozyPure customers are curious how organic comfort is made fresh daily, right here in the CozyPure workshop in Norfolk, Virginia.

_MG_1144_editedSlumber party guests, from left to right, Gaye Pietrocola, Michelle Germano, Cindy Thebaud, and Cindy Lee Hall learn about the making of CozyPure comforters and toppers in the workshop. Hahn, right, explains how the skilled artisans stitch, tuft and sew CozyPure products.

So, to say thank you to a few of our local customers and to demystify the CozyPure process, we hosted our first Slumber Party. On a cool evening on Oct. 8, 2015, guests were treated to an evening of refreshments, fun and an intimate look at the CozyPure organic bed making process.

slumber-party1

Over the course of the evening, our guests shared their stories of how they arrived at selecting their CozyPure sleep system. Many had tried so many others before coming to CozyPure. Guest Heather Mayes, after having purchased a mattress from another manufacturer, said her previous mattress, felt uncomfortable, “like sleeping on a marshmallow.” Since getting her CozyPure organic sleep system a few months ago, Heather has enjoyed more restful sleep in total comfort.

slumber-party3

Another guest, Gaye Pietrocola, has been a CozyPure organic bed owner for years. Among the other health benefits of sleeping on her CozyPure mattress, she and her husband Greg really appreciate the ease of being able to adjust the firmness of their mattress anytime they need to. “We just unzip it and adjust it,” she said, “it’s fun.”

IMG_3544

As CozyPure owner Cheryl Hahn guided the excited guests through the workshop, they got a chance to see the entire process before their eyes. Having nothing to hide in the CozyPure bed making process, guests got to see and feel the materials—organic cotton, therapeutic wool, and natural organic latex. Hahn explained that the milk of the rubber tree is slowly extracted from thousands of rubber trees on the plantations of Sri Lanka, each mattress requiring roughly 2,500 teaspoons of pure rubber milk to make one mattress. She also explained to intrigued guests how the milk is then prepared and baked in a mold, kind of like your favorite cake. No filler. No foams. No lies. Just pure organic comfort.

_MG_1139

Guests also got to feel the soft and luxurious LaNoodles found in CozyPure’s best selling LaNoodle pillows that are amazingly comfortable, resilient and sustainable.

At the conclusion of the first CozyPure Cuddle Up Club Slumber Party, guests played pin the tail on the lamb. The winner, Cindy Lee Hall, received a new CozyPure Wool Euro Pillow. Each guest also received gift bags with travel-size LaNoodle Pillows and other goodies.

IMG_3575

More importantly, what we at CozyPure hope our Slumber Party guests and our everyday customers walk away with is an understanding that CozyPure is genuinely committed to providing its customers with a quality handmade organic product, free of toxins and harmful chemicals. There are no secrets or hidden ingredients in the organic mattresses and bedding at CozyPure. We work very hard to maintain a “Farm-to-Bed” freshness and purity in all our CozyPure products. We invite every one to come see what goes on in our workshop at 2308 Granby Street in Norfolk, VA. We are always willing to give you a tour of our workshop so you can see the organic magic happen for yourself.

And who knows? Once you purchase your CozyPure organic sleep system, we may see you at our next Slumber Party. Don’t forget your PJs!

100% Woman-Owned, Made-In-The-USA Small Business

I am woman, hear me roar. Helen Reddy’s song reached #1 on the charts in 1972. I was nine. Young enough to be influenced, according to the lyrics, that my gender had no barriers. Having a mom who owned and operated a small hair salon certainly didn’t hurt either. Of course, that’s not to say it’s been an easy road to navigate this business I’ve nurtured and nourished over the past 25 years.

Raising two beautiful kids while running my company definitely had challenges. I spent many years doing most of my work only after they went to bed, and staying up until 2 AM to make deadlines. As they got older, my schedule changed with them. Sometimes a midday school play, doctor appointment or teacher meeting. Other times, spending a whole week across the country for a swim meet. I loved the flexibility, although it was very challenging to juggle the priorities — you know, like cleaning the house. But hey, I am woman, I can roll.

Back in the early 90’s we worked with outside manufacturers to make our products for us, but then it happened … They started outsourcing. I’m passionate about made in America. So this was near and dear to my heart. If our manufacturers wanted to move operations out of the USA, then heck we’ll just do it ourselves. And so it began, our journey into manufacturing. In the beginning, I admit I wasn’t sure where to start. But thankfully I had Cris, my right-hand-lady and expert seamstress. I am woman, and I had another one by my side, so let’s rock.

I’m over the assumptions, because almost everyone assumes my company is run by a man. Going to mattress manufacturing trade shows, an industry largely dominated by men, I’m no longer surprised when suppliers direct their conversation towards Hans, my right-hand-man and customer care extraordinaire. It’s actually a great opportunity for me to gain insight of the boys’ club who assume all the women attending are assistants and receptionists. I am woman. I am invincible, not invisible.

Most of the time I’m not Wonder Woman. Every strong woman knows to surround herself with superheroes. When my family, friends and colleagues are standing by my side, I make that transformation easily. Without them, and without our loyal customers, this road I travel would be lonely and strenuous. I am woman. I am strong. But I am stronger with others.

Just like everyone, through the years I’ve had my share of tragedies and disappointments which resulted in set-backs. But I’ve learned that when you get stuck in the mud, kick it off. If that doesn’t work, take off the boots. Just keep going. Because if I have to, I can do anything. I am woman.

ORGANIC COMFORT MADE FRESH DAILY with Farm Fresh Ingredients

Organic Comfort Made Fresh Daily with Farm Fresh ingredients

NATURAL LATEX RUBBERRubberTree_Milk_copy

SUPERIOR MATTRESS MATERIAL In 1931, the world’s first latex mattress was made. The features of not having to be flipped, staying fresh, responsive, supportive and keeping its shape made the mattress a huge success.

PROVEN TO PROVIDE HEALTHIER SLEEP The year 1954, latex foam is proven to contain exceptionally high anti-bacterial properties by Dr. Theo Lammers from the Institute of Hygiene Gutenburg University, making it the hygienic ideal for mattresses, superior to all other materials: unsurpassed in comfort and support, exceptional durability, stays cool, and is the healthiest choice due to its high anti-bacterial and allergy-free properties.

IDEAL FOR ASTHMA AND RESPIRATORY DISORDERS Further work in 1956 by Drs Fuchs & Gronemeyer at the Asthma Clinic, concluded, “the advantages of latex foam mattresses have been outlined by health and surgical authorities and the bacteriostatic (capable of killing bacteria), as well as fungus and mite resistant properties of latex material found by Lammers is confirmed.”
Throughout the decades, the cost of this premium material made it more expensive for manufacturers to produce and consumers often didn’t want to buy this higher priced option, thus latex mattresses were soon overshadowed by beds made with synthetic batting and petroleum foams placed over innerspring coils.

BOUNCING BACK In 1991, our flagship mail order catalog, Tomorrow’s World, was one of the first companies to offer a selection of natural latex mattresses made with organic cotton and wool. Consumers are beginning to understand the value equation of their purchases and realize that investing in a quality latex mattress will pay for itself many times over the lifetime of use it provides.

DECEPTIONS The popularity of latex mattresses comes with a price to consumer research. Many “so called” latex mattresses often only contain a small layer surrounded by foam and/or coils. Some “natural” latex really only contains a percentage of natural. Even materials such as “organic cotton” are being advertised on certain mattresses when in fact the fabric is blended with synthetic polyester. In this era of popularity for latex mattresses it’s imperative for the consumer to do thorough research so they can be 100% sure they are getting the product they think they are purchasing.

HOW OUR NATURAL LATEX RUBBER IS MADE Rubber tapping is the process by which rubber is harvested. An incision is made in the bark of a rubber tree, which cuts through the bark so the latex drips into a collecting cup. The work is done at night or in the early morning before the day’s temperature rises, so the latex will drip longer before coagulating and sealing the cut. Rubber tapping does not hurt the trees and it’s a great way for the indigenous people to make a living using their natural resources.

Each rubber tree weeps about one tablespoon of latex daily and a Queen size 6” core needs the daily output of 2500 trees, spread over 12 acres of rubber plantation, providing a living to eight rubber tappers. Interestingly, these rubber trees account for the removal of 143 metric tons of carbon dioxide from the environment every year.

100_natural_latex_rubberDon’t let the “creaminess” fool ya. Our natural latex rubber is made from the milk
of the Hevea Brasiliensis (rubber tree), so some folks think it will be too soft (like milk).
Actually, natural latex rubber is the firmest, heaviest and most durable component you
can use inside a mattress. Once the rubber tree milk sap is harvested and baked, this solid,
thick core can last for decades offering you support and comfort -WITHOUT the chemicals.

Natural latex rubber is proven to be the very best component used for mattress support, comfort, durability, as well as offering a healthier sleeping environment. It’s naturally dust mite resistant; it’s breathable so you don’t sleep hot; it’s resiliency is known to last for decades; it’s responsive support offers comfort and proper alignment.

Our natural latex is made from 100% natural rubber direct from the beautiful island of Sri Lanka, known for the finest rubber plantations in the world. No synthetic latex. No poly foams. No fillers. No lies.

THERAPEUTIC PURE WOOL
sheep
TEMPERATURE REGULATING AND HELPS KEEPS YOU DRY Wool provides a temperature controlled sleep environment that’s perfect for your body. No matter the season, wool is able to maintain the perfect body temperature. In the winter wool produces warmth without overheating and has the ability to keep you comfortable and in the summer you don’t overheat because of its moisture wicking process.

The average sleeper looses a pint of moisture every night and wool is able to absorb this moisture without feeling damp. The cells of wool fibers are able to quickly and efficiently absorb and evaporate moisture. Due to the natural crinkled structure, wool has an enormous capacity to store air. This property allows your skin to breathe as you sleep surrounded by natural, dry warmth – without the clammy feeling associated with synthetic materials. You’ll wake up well rested and refreshed. It’s the perfect ingredient for your mattress and comforter.

CALMS THE HEART FOR DEEPER SLEEP Studies show that the heart rate is significantly lower when sleeping with wool. Feathers, down, polyester and other synthetic fibers had no effect on (and sometimes increased) the sleeper’s heart rate. A lowered heart rate induces a deep, relaxed sleep.

NO DUST-MITES, MOLD OR MILDEW People with allergies are able to use wool products because it is resistant to bacteria, mold and mildew which can trigger allergic reactions. Wool is also dust-mite resistant because it evaporates moisture rapidly and dust-mites can’t thrive in a dry environment. Our wool is not chemically acid-washed, and it’s also completely covered in organic cotton, so even people with wool allergies can enjoy sleeping with a CozyPure® mattress and comforter.

NATURALLY FLAME RESISTANT Using ONLY WOOL we passed Federal Regulation PART 1633 – Standard for the Flammability (Open Flame) of Mattresses – so we don’t need to add any FR barrier or chemicals.

Because healthy bedding materials are becoming more popular, many manufacturers are now adding wool as a marketing tool – but that doesn’t mean the wool is the actual fire barrier. In most cases you’ll find they add wool under the fire barrier just so they can “claim wool” simply to sell their mattress.

OUR MATERIALS ARE NATURAL, RENEWABLE AND SUSTAINABLE

CERTIFIED ORGANIC COTTON

Cotton

Most consumers are unaware of the abundant textiles available to manufacture “green goods” and the opportunity to market products deceptively, otherwise known as “greenwashing”.  A perfect example is mattress ticking, the fabric used on the outside of a mattress.

Many mattresses offered today are marketed with “organic cotton” or “bamboo” fabric, however they neglect to tell you the content breakdown.

Mattress knits are comprised of three components: the face (top side), the fill (inside), the back (bottom). The majority of “organic cotton” knits feature organic cotton only on the top side. That is, the inside and bottom of the knit is made from polyester. These fabrics are advertised misleadingly to the consumer as “organic cotton” even though only 33% of the fabric is really organic.

CozyPure® never uses polyester blends in our fabrics. Adding synthetics would defeat our purpose of creating a natural sleep system that breathes. Man-made synthetic materials can trap heat and moisture which won’t allow breathability of the fabric. We also don’t process our organic cotton with chemical finishes such as formaldehyde, which is often used on wrinkle-resistant sheets.

THE HUMAN EXPERIMENT: Chemical Overload

People assume that if something’s for sale, it’s safe. Unfortunately, this is not true.

The Human Experiment, a documentary narrated by Sean Penn, investigates consumer products available for sale which we think are safe, yet contain thousands of unregulated chemicals.

Did you know that we’re exposed to over 80,000 potentially harmful synthetic chemicals every day? Of the almost 85,000 chemicals only 200 have been tested for safety.

Meanwhile, every year over 1,000 new chemicals are registered for use, yet unregulated for safety. Once you learn about some of the more shocking ingredients, you can start to phase them out by switching to safer alternative products. One of the easiest ways to do this is simply understanding the ingredients; if you don’t know a word listed on the label then it’s likely a chemical ingredient that you should research and find out if you’re comfortable using it.

We’re not saying all chemicals are bad. In fact some can help enhance our lives such as medications and certain plastics (eyeglasses, equipment, appliances, etc). However, since chemicals are virtually everywhere they’re basically impossible to eliminate completely which is why we suggest making your bedroom a sanctuary. It’s one place you really can choose safe, natural products to envelope yourself in a healthy healing space for eight hours and greatly reduce your chemical exposure.
