The Perfect Mother’s Day Gift: SLEEP

It is no secret that moms are some of the most sleep-deprived people in the world. They tend to juggle responsibilities all day and spend countless hours at night thinking about how to juggle even more. Studies show that mothers with small children are seriously lacking sleep, which over time can have some pretty negative effects on both physical and mental health. No matter how old her children, mothers tend to continue the habit of putting others needs before their own. Instead of shopping for the trendiest new gift of fashion or settling for the obligatory flowers, why not give Mom what she really wants (and needs) – SLEEP!
Just in time for Mother’s Day, CozyPure has assembled a bundle of some of our most popular items for the sleep deprived mom. We’ve paired together:Mother's Day Bundle

  • Our best selling LaNoodle pillow, the perfect pillow for Mom – it is adaptable to any type of sleeper, made with all natural latex and organic cotton (no harmful chemicals) and simply the coziest pillow to be found – and designed to last up to 10 times longer than conventional pillows
  • Our ever popular Pebble Pique Travel Blanket which is handcrafted in our Virginia workshop and made from luxurious Organic Cotton Matelasse and beautiful like Mom
  • Organic Lavender Linen Spray, soothing aromatherapy to relax Mom’s mind, body and spirit

This trifecta is the perfect Mother’s Day gift and will arrive packaged in our kraft bag with a complimentary handcrafted note card.

Due to the handcrMothersDay_online cardafted nature of our items, we can’t guarantee delivery by Mother’s Day on orders received after May 1st. However, Mom will agree it’s worth the wait. In the meantime, you can print out a gift announcement HERE to put in Mom’s card notifying her that the gift of sleep is on the way!

Our products are sustainable, natural and organic and made in the USA, and our company is woman-owned by a mom that grew this company while raising children of her own. She thinks sleep is the perfect gift and every mom is sure to agree!

The retail price for the items in this bundle is $133 – the Mother’s Day Bundle is being offered for $99.  Valid until Mother’s Day 2016.

As Seen on TV – Behind the Scenes at CozyPure Mattress Factory

There’s never a boring moment here at CozyPure.  Some days you come in to a ton of online orders, some days you are swamped with customers in our Norfolk, VA showroom, and some days it’s “lights, camera, action,” fortunately for me the latter isn’t too often. Today we were visited by Cheryl Tan and her camera crew to do a segment for HR Business Weekly, a 30 minute show produced by WVEC ABC13 and their partners, that serves as a resource and voice for entrepreneurs and small to medium sized businesses in the region.

Cheryl Hahn being interviewed by Cheryl Tan for HR Business Weekly.

They were here to interview Cheryl Hahn, our fabulous owner, as “entrepreneur of the week.”  There is always plenty to say about our organic latex mattresses and Cheryl’s passion to her company, natural latex mattresses, organic bedding materials is inspiring to other local entrepreneurs.

Cheryl let us know that filming would be taking place in the workshop and showroom today and my seat in the lobby is often a hot-spot for traffic so I knew to brush my hair.  What we could not foresee is that one of our artisans would be out sick today.  When the camera is on, you naturally want everything to look it’s best and CozyPure’s workshop looks best when everyone is busy working.  So, guess who had to fill in?  That would be me, the new girl.  I’ve never operated a sewing machine in my life but for “staging purposes” I sat in front of one today and that is all I intended to do was “sit“. However, I was quickly approached by a true artisan that thought it would look even better if I was actually working and she taught me how to sew on a blanket’s binding.  I never expected to sew today and I don’t expect to sew tomorrow but I’m glad I could fill an empty seat, while the cameras were rolling at least.

Just for the cameras, I pretended to sew.
Just for the cameras, I pretended to sew.

The camera crew seemed mesmerized by our workshop bustling with activity – there is something aesthetically pleasing about seeing hands working with beautiful raw materials.  In our workshop our artisans make the finest bedding materials from all natural materials.  This behind-the-scenes look at the craftsmanship that goes in to every CozyPure mattress is sure to make a great video for the local viewing audience.  The camera crew captured the sewing of organic cotton, the tying of handmade wool comforters, even the creation of CozyPure’s exclusive LaNoodle pillows, hand filled with pure natural latex noodles.  There are much more interesting things going on in the workshop than me pretending to be a seamstress, but that was the highlight of my day nevertheless.

Written by Angela Carey, CozyPure’s newest team member.  Angela brings over 15 years of experience in sales and marketing to the CozyPure staff and is currently greeting customers, answering phones and pretending to sew when the camera is on.

CozyPure Cuddle-Up Club Slumber Party

Loyal customers gather to learn more about how organic comfort is made fresh daily at CozyPure.

CozyPure has been in business for 25 years. In that time, it has gained quite a following of loyal customers across the country. With a product so durable, sustainable and amazingly comfortable, a lot of praise has been offered from our customers. Being such informed consumers, many CozyPure customers are curious how organic comfort is made fresh daily, right here in the CozyPure workshop in Norfolk, Virginia.

_MG_1144_editedSlumber party guests, from left to right, Gaye Pietrocola, Michelle Germano, Cindy Thebaud, and Cindy Lee Hall learn about the making of CozyPure comforters and toppers in the workshop. Hahn, right, explains how the skilled artisans stitch, tuft and sew CozyPure products.

So, to say thank you to a few of our local customers and to demystify the CozyPure process, we hosted our first Slumber Party. On a cool evening on Oct. 8, 2015, guests were treated to an evening of refreshments, fun and an intimate look at the CozyPure organic bed making process.

slumber-party1

Over the course of the evening, our guests shared their stories of how they arrived at selecting their CozyPure sleep system. Many had tried so many others before coming to CozyPure. Guest Heather Mayes, after having purchased a mattress from another manufacturer, said her previous mattress, felt uncomfortable, “like sleeping on a marshmallow.” Since getting her CozyPure organic sleep system a few months ago, Heather has enjoyed more restful sleep in total comfort.

slumber-party3

Another guest, Gaye Pietrocola, has been a CozyPure organic bed owner for years. Among the other health benefits of sleeping on her CozyPure mattress, she and her husband Greg really appreciate the ease of being able to adjust the firmness of their mattress anytime they need to. “We just unzip it and adjust it,” she said, “it’s fun.”

IMG_3544

As CozyPure owner Cheryl Hahn guided the excited guests through the workshop, they got a chance to see the entire process before their eyes. Having nothing to hide in the CozyPure bed making process, guests got to see and feel the materials—organic cotton, therapeutic wool, and natural organic latex. Hahn explained that the milk of the rubber tree is slowly extracted from thousands of rubber trees on the plantations of Sri Lanka, each mattress requiring roughly 2,500 teaspoons of pure rubber milk to make one mattress. She also explained to intrigued guests how the milk is then prepared and baked in a mold, kind of like your favorite cake. No filler. No foams. No lies. Just pure organic comfort.

_MG_1139

Guests also got to feel the soft and luxurious LaNoodles found in CozyPure’s best selling LaNoodle pillows that are amazingly comfortable, resilient and sustainable.

At the conclusion of the first CozyPure Cuddle Up Club Slumber Party, guests played pin the tail on the lamb. The winner, Cindy Lee Hall, received a new CozyPure Wool Euro Pillow. Each guest also received gift bags with travel-size LaNoodle Pillows and other goodies.

IMG_3575

More importantly, what we at CozyPure hope our Slumber Party guests and our everyday customers walk away with is an understanding that CozyPure is genuinely committed to providing its customers with a quality handmade organic product, free of toxins and harmful chemicals. There are no secrets or hidden ingredients in the organic mattresses and bedding at CozyPure. We work very hard to maintain a “Farm-to-Bed” freshness and purity in all our CozyPure products. We invite every one to come see what goes on in our workshop at 2308 Granby Street in Norfolk, VA. We are always willing to give you a tour of our workshop so you can see the organic magic happen for yourself.

And who knows? Once you purchase your CozyPure organic sleep system, we may see you at our next Slumber Party. Don’t forget your PJs!

100% Woman-Owned, Made-In-The-USA Small Business

I am woman, hear me roar. Helen Reddy’s song reached #1 on the charts in 1972. I was nine. Young enough to be influenced, according to the lyrics, that my gender had no barriers. Having a mom who owned and operated a small hair salon certainly didn’t hurt either. Of course, that’s not to say it’s been an easy road to navigate this business I’ve nurtured and nourished over the past 25 years.

Raising two beautiful kids while running my company definitely had challenges. I spent many years doing most of my work only after they went to bed, and staying up until 2 AM to make deadlines. As they got older, my schedule changed with them. Sometimes a midday school play, doctor appointment or teacher meeting. Other times, spending a whole week across the country for a swim meet. I loved the flexibility, although it was very challenging to juggle the priorities — you know, like cleaning the house. But hey, I am woman, I can roll.

Back in the early 90’s we worked with outside manufacturers to make our products for us, but then it happened … They started outsourcing. I’m passionate about made in America. So this was near and dear to my heart. If our manufacturers wanted to move operations out of the USA, then heck we’ll just do it ourselves. And so it began, our journey into manufacturing. In the beginning, I admit I wasn’t sure where to start. But thankfully I had Cris, my right-hand-lady and expert seamstress. I am woman, and I had another one by my side, so let’s rock.

I’m over the assumptions, because almost everyone assumes my company is run by a man. Going to mattress manufacturing trade shows, an industry largely dominated by men, I’m no longer surprised when suppliers direct their conversation towards Hans, my right-hand-man and customer care extraordinaire. It’s actually a great opportunity for me to gain insight of the boys’ club who assume all the women attending are assistants and receptionists. I am woman. I am invincible, not invisible.

Most of the time I’m not Wonder Woman. Every strong woman knows to surround herself with superheroes. When my family, friends and colleagues are standing by my side, I make that transformation easily. Without them, and without our loyal customers, this road I travel would be lonely and strenuous. I am woman. I am strong. But I am stronger with others.

Just like everyone, through the years I’ve had my share of tragedies and disappointments which resulted in set-backs. But I’ve learned that when you get stuck in the mud, kick it off. If that doesn’t work, take off the boots. Just keep going. Because if I have to, I can do anything. I am woman.

Making it in America

A message from Cheryl Hahn, CozyPure CEO & Founder Once upon a time, America was a strong leader in the manufacturing industry, which created millions of jobs across the country. Outsourcing overseas for cheap labor gained popularity in the late 1970’s and has accelerated over the past few decades to the point where almost every product we buy is made in another country. But there are a few companies determined to keep it made in the USA. CozyPure® is one of them.

Our “Back of House” team

Centuries ago, nearly everything was made by hand. It’s almost a lost art to cut fabric with scissors, hand-tuft with needles and fill pillows by hand, when all this can be done by automated machines that mass produce hundreds of products a day. Our “Back-of-House” artisans craft products made-to-order, just for you. Their skilled workmanship using natural materials is a distinct process, so each item is unique. diane

Maggie May’s Workshop Revisited: Before and After

CP_Workshop_before_091514

Photo from September 15, 2014

When Maggie May looked like this a year ago, it was hard to see a bustling workshop filled with hardworking artisans and beautifully finished handcrafted organic bedding. It was a “kitchen” in desperate need of an overhaul to make it a special place for organic comfort to be made daily.

Today, Maggie May’s “kitchen” is top-notch and filled with talented artisans and an inventory of high-quality organic bedding. What a difference a year makes. You’re welcome to visit 2308 Granby Street in Norfolk anytime to get a look at the magic happening in the CozyPure workshop.

Maggie May’s Facelift: Before and After

CP_Exterior_before_09014

Photo from September 1, 2014

This time last year, Maggie May’s beautiful face was buried behind trees and chipping gray paint. The morning sun could barely get to her to show her age. Luckily, Cheryl and the dedicated crew could still see some potential in the old gal. But she needed a facelift to stand out among the Granby Street businesses again.

Today, Maggie May has undergone multiple exterior renovations and has a striking new coat of paint and less foliage hiding her beautiful facade from the public. She is now eye-catching and inviting to everyone who passes by. Plus, she is expecting further beautification with a sprawling handpainted mural. So keep your eyes on Maggie May and stop in to CozyPure on the corner of Granby and 24th in Norfolk, VA and have Test Rest in Maggie’s dreamy showroom.

The Workshop: Before and After

CP_Workshop_before_082614 CP_Workshop_before_082614_2

Photos from August 26, 2014

Some would say one of Maggie May’s greatest assets is her huge backside. After all, the main reason Cheryl sought out a new location was for more room to continue making organic comfort daily. And the old Ocean View location could no longer contain the steady growth CozyPure is experiencing. So, getting Maggie May in shape would give the skilled artisans a bigger area for storage and more elbow room to continue handcrafting organic mattresses and bedding.

Today, just beyond the dream-like showroom, Maggie May’s huge backside is the spacious workshop of the CozyPure artisans. It’s open spaces are now filled with the finest organic ingredients and the most talented and committed craftspeople in Norfolk. In their new space, they are preparing all organic mattresses and bedding with the efficiency and attention to detail you’d find at a premiere bistro. Order Up!

Cheryl’s Corner: Before and After

CPInterior0824_before Cheryl’s Corner: Before
Photo from August 24, 2014

Maggie May has gone through a number of different transformations and cover-ups throughout the course of serving as warehouse and office space for a number of different Norfolk businesses. But Cheryl wanted to see Maggie’s true face before moving in. All the ceiling tiles and carpet and unnecessary walls had to be stripped up, knocked down, and carried out. Here we see the morning sun showing Maggie’s age with years of old interiors piled on the floor. But, don’t worry, it is always darkest before the dawn, Maggie May.

Today, this very same corner is filled with light, color, plant life, and even owner Cheryl Hahn herself. Maggie May has indeed come a long way from a year ago. The beautiful bare cement floors and the quaint exposed brick walls show the personality of a tough old gal primed and ready to house the skilled staff and artisans making organic comfort daily here at 2308 Granby Street, Norfolk.

Sleep Your Way to the Top

Ever wonder why your teenager is always moping around the house, lazy as ever, and seemingly distant? Maybe its because they are staying up all night texting and talking and crying and writing bad poetry instead of getting the sleep that they need. Not to discourage the social order of children and teens in this day and age – because lets face it, there will always be the social hierarchy no matter where you go – and not to discourage the making of the next Sylvia Plath – because lets face it, Lorde can’t take her place forever – but teens do need the most sleep out of all ages. Teen-hood is when our bodies are struggling through puberty and our brains are trying their damnedest to push past the constant pain of wishy-washy hormones. The fact that school begins before the break of dawn in most places does not help out the cause of our reckless youth at all – in fact, it could be making them more anxious, more reckless, more defiant.

pillow1

Parents – except not just parents because as a teen you are old enough to call some shots yourself – should be assuring, or at least recommending that their child get the proper amount of rest each night in order to perform their best the next day. Teens should be getting at least 8 1/2 hours of sleep each night (although 9 is ideal) but many don’t go to bed until one and wake up by six in the morning. Sure, I’m not saying that school schedules should be adjusted for those who do go to bed at one because they’re up all night socializing, that’s their own choice; however, a little slack granted upon those who try their hardest to sleep at least 7 hours a night should be rewarded, perhaps school can be adjusted to start a half an hour later, that’s a whole extra half an hour of sleep.

Also, it’s a treacherous thing to set that alarm clock for the earliest possible time and then press the snooze button five times after it has gone off. I used to think that this was a good idea, I would set my alarm for six and then press snooze until it was six thirty, I thought it would be the perfect way to ease me into my waking state. I was wrong. Doing this screws with your sleep cycle in odd ways. It makes one more groggy because in those five to ten minutes before your alarm rings again you might tread the thin line between sleep and consciousness, which is hurtful to a persons sleep-wake cycle when they are so rudely awakened once more by that more-than-annoying alarm clock (because even the radio can be a nuisance in the AM.) I now set my alarm for six thirty and press snooze only once before I force myself out from underneath the impeccable, insatiable, immaculate comfort that lies in the arms of my  wool comforter. I’m melting just thinking about it, if there is one thing that the stiff morning hours bring is the grief of waking up only to be thrust into the wild hallways of my high school (#thankGodforGraduation), which in turn reminds me to be thankful for all the small luxuries in my life (i.e. my wool comforter!)

bodypillow-joy copy

What a refreshing experience that a good nights sleep actually is. When I wake up after getting at least seven hours of sleep (because yes, with our busy schedules in this day and age, even I can’t be expected to always get the recommended eight hours of sleep – unless its a weekend.) And why do you have to go and make things so complicated by running yourself insane with sleep deprivation? Just turn off the lights and shut your eyes! Sure, I know you want to get caught up on your favorite TV show, and you will, in time. But watching TV before bed can be just as damaging to our sleep as anything else. The light that radiates from the TV screen/computer screen/smartphone/tablet/PSP screen is detrimental to our bodies natural production of melatonin, which aids in the process of falling asleep when necessary. My best advice is – if you’re tired, and it’s past eight, then it’s time for bed. And who can honestly resist the warm comfort that an organic  mattress entails? Who can escape the sweet seduction of a cuddle-ready mattress and other various natural bedding? Who needs a cuddle buddy when you have your La’Noodle pillow (because they don’t steal your blankets from you, and they won’t kick you in their sleep.)

So once again, I stress the fact that one must attain the proper rest in order to perform at their peak and take the world by storm.

As Arianna Huffington quotes that she “slept her way to the top,” quite literally, and there may not be any other way to get there.

Studies show that sleeping helps our brain process information quicker so that we can spend more quality time doing the things that need to be done. Even taking a short nap mid-day can help one think clearer. Instead of giving up sleep how about we give up other vices, such as that midnight margarita. I’m not trying to preach about giving up your social life and locking your doors every night at eight-o-clock because its bedtime. If its a weekend and your friends want you to go out, carpe diem, but when its time to work the best thing that you can do to get the best results is to clock in some quality sleep.

I saw these guys in concert the other night and thought that I might post this video (yes, I took my own videos but I also took them on my phone and the video is actually pretty good for the whole one pixle in it) because this song is so beautiful. Turn out all the lights, close your eyes, and drift away. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYs_mEiquy8

And remember to get the best sleep that you can each night so that one day you might be as talented as these guys, or any one else that you might aspire to be like when you grow up – because your always going to be growing up, don’t ever let age stop you from following your dreams.
