UNDERCOVER: KILLING US SOFTLY. A look at the ingredients inside mattress components

YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT… AND SLEEP.
Besides food, our mattress and bedding are probably the most intimate products we use everyday. Not only are we up-close and personal with our sleep products, keep in mind we spend a 1/3 of our lives sleeping.

Collectively that’s a solid four months every year we spend in bed. Because we rarely give it thought, most of us are more concerned about the food we put in our mouth rather than the pillow we have up against our nose for eight hours every night.

MEMORY FOAM
Memory foam is a petroleum-based polyurethane with additional unregulated “proprietary” chemicals which increase the viscosity and density of the foam. The proprietary formula is what “sucks you in” as you lay helplessly trapped inside a squishy sink-hole of chemicals.

MemoryFoam

A class action suit has been filed in California courts alleging that Tempurpedic’s memory foam mattresses contain harmful VOCs. They believe the company has minimized the problem when advertising their products by stating that the odors will dissipate and that products are VOC-free, when formaldehyde and other odors may continue to be released for months. To date, there’s been no resolution; the suit is still active.

THE CLAIM ON THE ATTORNEY’S WEBSITE states that formaldehyde, a strong VOC and known carcinogen, has been identified in laboratory testing of Tempurpedic products.

Manufacturers are not legally required to disclose the chemicals in mattresses.

Memory foam can help reduce pressure points which is why it’s a popular choice for mattresses and pillows, however its low resiliency doesn’t offer total full-body support for your entire body and heavier parts of your body will sink in more. The deeper you sink into the mattress, the more likely you’ll “sleep hot.” It should also be noted that the temperature of your bedroom can lead to the mattress becoming “too soft” or “too hard.” Most of these attributes are contributed directly to the chemical composition used to make memory foam.

DON’T BE FOOLED BY SOY-FOAM
Consumer awareness is growing and chemical manufacturers are developing marketing gimmicks which fool consumers into believing certain foams are safer, healthier and eco-friendly.

soyfoam

Take for example soy-based or bio-based foam. What they don’t tell you is that the foam contains very little soy. In fact, it is more accurate to call it polyurethane based foam with just a little soy added for marketing purposes. In fact, to date, the highest percentage of soy used in foam is only 20%. Since polyurethane foam is made by combining two main ingredients — a polyol and an isocyanate — in approximate equal parts, “20% soy based” translates to a mere 10% of the foam’s total volume and 90% as polyurethane.

POLYURETHANE FOAMS AND FIRE RETARDANTS
Large amounts of unregulated chemicals can be found in almost all synthetic foams (including soy-foam). The basic ingredients include polyols, isocyanates, blowing agents, and other additives including flame retardants. Although PBDEs have finally been phased out due to documented health hazards, new alternative chemicals are now being used in their place during the manufacture of flexible polyurethane foam. In addition, many fabrics are coated with both stain-resistant chemicals and flame retardant chemicals.

According to a recent EPA report released in August of 2015, most of these newer chemicals still have “limited data” with notes such as: “There is uncertainty due to lack of data for this substance. XYZ is estimated to have uncertain potential for carcinogenicity based on analogy to a closely related confidential analog and professional judgment; carcinogenic effects cannot be ruled out.”

Most exposure to flame retardants occurs after the chemicals migrate out of a product’s foam and settle into household dust, which then enter our bodies. The chemicals are constantly dispersing into the air, then settling. Exposure comes primarily from ingesting contaminated dust.

“Additive flame retardants are expected to be more mobile during the consumer use phase, and have been widely identified in air and house dust, supporting the idea that additive flame retardants can mobilize from a plastic or foam into the local micro-environment.”
-EPA Report 8/15

Mattresses made with foams that have the CertiPUR® label are marketed as a safer foam with a certification from “The Alliance for Flexible Polyurethane Foam”. The Alliance is made up of foam manufacturers who certify their own foam to their own standards.

One such standard is the foam is made without PBDEs, TDCPP or TCEP Tris flame retardants. PBDEs  have been phased out and Chlorinated Tris is banned in many states. The chemical industry is replacing the banned FRs with newer, untested chemicals.

According to Heather Stapleton, Ph.D. in environmental chemistry and authority figure on the toxicity of flame retardants, “The (Certipur) label… is simply an advertisement for the Certipur program. This is a program developed by US polyurethane foam manufacturers to demonstrate environmental stewardship. It means that the foam used in that product has been tested for several known toxins including VOCs, metals and a few flame retardants. But the product can certainly still contain a flame retardant and have the Certipur label. There are many (FR chemicals) in use on the market today that are not tested in the Certipur program and for which we have concerns about health effects.”

certifpur“We don’t know as much about the health effects of replacement flame retardants,” according to Stapleton, “but a few studies have shown that these new chemicals may also disrupt hormone function.

CozyPure® doesn’t use polyurethane foam, soy-foam, memory foam, chemical flame retardants or treated fabrics. Our natural rubber latex is wrapped inside organic cotton quilted to wool which passes the Open Flame Federal Regulation. Wool self-extinguishes and doesn’t burn black toxic smoke when ignited. Why toss and turn all night worrying about unknown chemicals and flame retardants when you can sleep soundly on a mattress made exclusively from organic and natural ingredients?

SYNTHETIC LATEX, BLENDED LATEX, NATURAL LATEX
Synthetic latex (SBR) is derived mainly from the industrial chemicals styrene and butadiene. These copolymers are emulsified, and other chemical agents are added as stabilizers for polymerization and vulcanization.

Natural latex rubber (NR) is derived using 100% of the milk from the hevea brasiliensis rubber tree. Additional ingredients (less than 5% combined) include soda ash, zinc and soap which are whipped together with the rubber milk. The frothy mixture is then poured into a pan and baked — just like a cake!

100-natural-latex

Most latex offered in mattresses is either 100% synthetic or a blend of 80% synthetic and 20% natural. Manufacturers, like CozyPure®, who specialize in organic and natural materials offer only 100% natural latex rubber mattresses, with no synthetics, fillers or blends.

Trying to determine what kind of latex is in a mattress can be very difficult for consumers because of confusing wording or phrasing. For instance terms like “pure latex” many times refers to 100% synthetic man-made chemical latex because it is pure (solid) latex. Terms such as “made from natural latex” often refers to blended versions that have only a portion of natural, hence they can say “made from” even if it’s only made from 20% natural. Confusing right? We agree. And trying to find the correct answers, can be challenging.

Unfortunately most salespeople, especially in larger retail stores, often don’t know the difference so there’s a huge probability you’ll receive inaccurate information (we know because we’ve visited most of them). Be aware also, that many retailers will label a mattress as being a latex mattress even if it has as little as 1” of latex in its construction.

gols-organic-latex
Organic Latex Rubber will have the certification, for example the CozyPure organic latex shown above features the GOLS label.

If you’re not sure about the latex in a certain mattress, ask to see the certifications or check the law label. To find mattresses made only from solid 100% natural latex rubber, the best bet is a smaller manufacturer who specializes in using only natural materials, like CozyPure®.

A doggone good time at work

If you know me, then you know how much I love my furry four-legged friends. Trust me, between felines and canines, my house is full. I have been a part of the CozyPure family since 2007 and immediately fell in love with the natural bedding, as well as the commitment to made in the USA quality, but I must admit one of my favorite things was the location. Our building in Ocean View was only a few blocks from my house which allowed me to go home during breaks and spend time with my best friends, Sunshine and Cycle. I’d take them outside for walks, and when the weather was really nice, we’d enjoy the beach before I went back to work. Life was good!

But CozyPure was growing… in the Spring of 2014, Cheryl, the CEO and founder, announced that we had no choice but to move to a larger location. By summer of the same year, we found our new building at 24th and Granby. Five times larger, but also five times further from my house. While I was happy for the space, I was secretly saddened that I would not have time to go home during break to spend time with Sunshine and Cycle. I am not sure why I was surprised, but Cheryl already had a plan. The new location was large enough to allow a “doggy day care” in the office and I could bring them to work with me! Since quite a few of us have four-legged friends, we were ALL excited when Cheryl told us the news.

All the doggies have their own CozyPure pet bed, although they move around and share their beds with each other. When I’m not at my desk or in the factory, you can find me outside walking and playing with all the dogs. Having them by my side brightens my day, adds to productivity and I have formed better working relationships with my co-workers through our “cute pet stories.”

Meet The Doggone Crew

Sunshine: My dog, but she likes to hang out at Cheryl’s desk. I think Cheryl secretly gives her treats but they both deny it. As a herding dog, Sunshine has learned to improvise. She loves running around our parking lot barking and chasing the birds in-flight. I’m not sure what she would do if she ever caught one, but at 13 years old and not one caught yet, pretty sure I will never know.

Cycle (rhymes with Pickle): My adopted girl from Norfolk Animal Care Center, also 13, was dropped off at the shelter by her previous human. Unwanted, scared, confused and depressed, Cycle was overlooked by potential adopters and would soon be put down. A last plea was put out by the shelter and I couldn’t resist her big, sad eyes. Turns out all she wanted was love and security which she gets from me, as well as all the CozyPure family members, and her sweet personality is evolving every day. Visit your local animal shelter soon and adopt. The gratitude you receive from your adopted pet will amaze you!

Finn: Susan’s faithful pit-mix companion is our furry friend known best for his big kisses, Also adopted as a youngster from a shelter, Finns favorite past-time is lounging on all the dog beds before finally sneaking on the daybed filled with pillows. I don’t think he knows which is his favorite. I agree, it is a tough choice!

Chico: Diane’s little baby is the smallest of the group and also the feistiest. A cute little itty bitty Chihuahua with a big personality that keeps all the others in line. He’s all about the “head scratching” and will be sure to let you know when he has had enough (which is never).

Bosco and Sasha: The pups of the group, also rescued, belong to Ellis. They always keep us entertained with their spunky curiosity and energy. I LOVE puppies and they are both growing so fast!

Bringing dogs to work helps keep employees’ spirits high and adds to the sense of community and connection. Without even knowing it, our doggies have brought us closer together. The next time you find yourself at 24th and Granby, come in and say “hi” to our CozyPure doggies… we will happily take you through the office for a meet and greet of wagging tails and big kisses.

Maggie May’s Workshop Revisited: Before and After

CP_Workshop_before_091514

Photo from September 15, 2014

When Maggie May looked like this a year ago, it was hard to see a bustling workshop filled with hardworking artisans and beautifully finished handcrafted organic bedding. It was a “kitchen” in desperate need of an overhaul to make it a special place for organic comfort to be made daily.

Today, Maggie May’s “kitchen” is top-notch and filled with talented artisans and an inventory of high-quality organic bedding. What a difference a year makes. You’re welcome to visit 2308 Granby Street in Norfolk anytime to get a look at the magic happening in the CozyPure workshop.

Maggie May’s Facelift: Before and After

CP_Exterior_before_09014

Photo from September 1, 2014

This time last year, Maggie May’s beautiful face was buried behind trees and chipping gray paint. The morning sun could barely get to her to show her age. Luckily, Cheryl and the dedicated crew could still see some potential in the old gal. But she needed a facelift to stand out among the Granby Street businesses again.

Today, Maggie May has undergone multiple exterior renovations and has a striking new coat of paint and less foliage hiding her beautiful facade from the public. She is now eye-catching and inviting to everyone who passes by. Plus, she is expecting further beautification with a sprawling handpainted mural. So keep your eyes on Maggie May and stop in to CozyPure on the corner of Granby and 24th in Norfolk, VA and have Test Rest in Maggie’s dreamy showroom.

The Workshop: Before and After

Photos from August 26, 2014

Some would say one of Maggie May’s greatest assets is her huge backside. After all, the main reason Cheryl sought out a new location was for more room to continue making organic comfort daily. And the old Ocean View location could no longer contain the steady growth CozyPure is experiencing. So, getting Maggie May in shape would give the skilled artisans a bigger area for storage and more elbow room to continue handcrafting organic mattresses and bedding.

Today, just beyond the dream-like showroom, Maggie May’s huge backside is the spacious workshop of the CozyPure artisans. It’s open spaces are now filled with the finest organic ingredients and the most talented and committed craftspeople in Norfolk. In their new space, they are preparing all organic mattresses and bedding with the efficiency and attention to detail you’d find at a premiere bistro. Order Up!

The Creative Corner: Before and After

Thanks to an awesome demolition job, yesterday’s mess is today’s possibilities for Maggie May. From the vantage point shown here, we see through the current office landscape, to the door opening to what is currently CozyPure’s lobby. A lot of gutting took place to get Maggie May up to snuff.

Today, there is a wall and workshop space in use in the approximate spot where the 2014 photo was taken. But, stepping just inside that wall, we have a photo of one of CozyPure’s newest additions to its team, the creative/marketing department, directed by yours truly, Troy Cooper. And the view from just over my desk is pretty sweet. Maggie May is an enchanting place to create with an overhead view that looks not like a ceiling, but a starlit sky. As a newcomer and fan of good architecture, I say a big Kudos to everyone that had a hand in making Maggie May the incredible accomplishment that she is.

Stop by CozyPure at 2308 Granby Street, Norfolk to see Maggie May.

Cheryl’s Corner: Before and After

CPInterior0824_before Cheryl’s Corner: Before
Photo from August 24, 2014

Maggie May has gone through a number of different transformations and cover-ups throughout the course of serving as warehouse and office space for a number of different Norfolk businesses. But Cheryl wanted to see Maggie’s true face before moving in. All the ceiling tiles and carpet and unnecessary walls had to be stripped up, knocked down, and carried out. Here we see the morning sun showing Maggie’s age with years of old interiors piled on the floor. But, don’t worry, it is always darkest before the dawn, Maggie May.

Cheryl’s Corner: After

Today, this very same corner is filled with light, color, plant life, and even owner Cheryl Hahn herself. Maggie May has indeed come a long way from a year ago. The beautiful bare cement floors and the quaint exposed brick walls show the personality of a tough old gal primed and ready to house the skilled staff and artisans making organic comfort daily here at 2308 Granby Street, Norfolk.

This is gonna hurt me more than it hurts you, Maggie

CP_Maggie_GonnaHurt_082014

Compilation of Photos from August 20, 2014

There’s an old saying: to make an omelet, you gotta break some eggs. And to get Maggie May in shape to be the new home of CozyPure Organic Mattresses and Bedding, she had to be broken down a bit. Here we see owner, Cheryl Hahn breaking a few of Maggie’s eggs, or walls as it were, opening up some space with a trusty sledgehammer. And while it may have hurt Cheryl more than it hurt Maggie to tear down her walls, she, like most nurturing caregivers, knew it was for Maggie May’s own good in the long run.

The Makeover of Maggie May

BuildingMorph

One year ago, on August 20th 2014, CozyPure began making a new home on Granby Street in Norfolk. The renovation of CozyPure’s new showroom and workshop was an amazing process. And for those who didn’t get to witness the transformation, it is hard to believe that the location where organic comfort is now made fresh daily could’ve ever come together so well and so quickly.

CozyPure owner Cheryl Hahn felt a kinship and synergy with the old place on Granby street from the second she saw it. When it became available, she jumped at the chance to make the century-old building vital again and the new home of CozyPure. But to do that, the building had to be stripped down and made over from head to toe.

In order to make the monumental task of converting the gigantic Granby street location into the CozyPure showroom and workshop, Cheryl needed to humanize the building to keep herself going. If it had a name, it had a reason to be nursed back to health. Naturally Cheryl’s first thought was to name the building after her dear departed mother, Margaret. Add that to her relationship with the building having so many similarities to the classic Rod Stewart song, “Maggie May,” the name was quite evident.

In the painstaking months of gutting, repairing and refreshing the old building, even the craftsmen and builders that worked so hard to bring the building back to glory began to refer to the handmade structure by the name “Maggie.” Her spirit began to enchant the entire crew, each one becoming dedicated to restoring the old gal to her glory days.

One year later, now that Maggie May is pretty much all fixed up, we would like to share the transformation of the new CozyPure location. Through before and after photographs posted chronologically (or as chronologically as possible), you can witness the makeover of Maggie May and appreciate the commitment and hard work that went into getting her back to her old glory.

We hope you come visit Maggie May at our new location: 2308 Granby Street in Norfolk, Virginia. She may just steal your heart.

Every Day is Earth Day

We like to be mindful of our environment every day around here. But some things just can’t be avoided. As green as we are in our company practices we’re still occasionally confronted with some challenges that are very “un-green” while running the business. The difference, however, is how we choose to deal with those things. First a little background.

If you’re not familiar with our company, we started out back in 1990 as one of America’s first green-living stores originally under the name Tomorrow’s World. We offered everything from compact fluorescent light bulbs to shower heads and even low-flow toilets!

catalogs
Archived catalogs

Our mail order catalogs featured clothing and bedding made from organic, sustainable fibers such as hemp and organic cotton… in fact we were one of the first retailers in the country to ship mattresses and bedding direct to the consumer.

Early 1990’s. We sold mattresses with organic materials in our catalog way before the internet

In 2011, we invested in a solar system that generates 89,400 kWh of electricity yearly.

CozyPure® is proud to be an EPA Green-Power-Partner

The lighting in our recently renovated space features 4w LED bulbs throughout the offices and showroom. The entire area of 5,000 SF uses a total equivalent of having eight lamps with 75watt light bulbs. WOOP!

showroom
We have SIXTY dimmable LED bulbs in our showroom – the equivalent of four 60 watt light bulbs

We upgraded all the workshop bulbs from T12 to T2. Not only are they energy efficient, they also provide a beautiful bright light that looks very similar to the natural daylight we get from the skylights in our historic early 1900 building.

t2-lights
We converted sixty fixtures from T12 bulbs (75 watts each)   to T2 bulbs (11 watts each). YOWSA!

In our parking lot the recycling dumpster is 3x bigger than the trash dumpster. We encourage a no-waste policy and reuse or recycle mostly everything. Paper copies are converted for note-taking (no post-its here). We collect our raw material scraps and offer to crafters at an affordable price.

batting
Why waste scraps of beautiful organic batting when someone else can use them?

We’ve always had plants to not only provide aesthetics in our surroundings, but to also naturally filter the air around us. Our first plant, Aggie, has been with us now for over 20 years. OK so maybe she’s really a tree (over 7 feet with yearly clippings)

office-plants
No it’s not a greenhouse or nursery, we just love plants. Oh and BTW those cool glass-wood partition walls were demoed and upcycled from their original use circa 1930 – just part of the history in our beloved 1909 building that we wanted to preserve – so yup we did that too 🙂

Of course, ALL of our products are made from sustainable, renewable materials such as organic rubber, organic cotton, wool, buckwheat and kapok and made in the USA. We DO NOT make CozyPure bedding from non-renewable petroleum foams or synthetics – the most common materials in conventional bedding (yup – you probably have that yucky stuff in your pillows, blankets and mattress – sorry).

organic-bedding
Wool comforters – the kind great-grandma had, you know, the kind that lasted

Our warehouse shelving and workshop tables are custom-made and handcrafted from FSC-certified wood.

work-tables
Oh it’s our lovely ladies who tuft, they’re pretty awesome

Our kitchenette was upgraded with an on-demand hot water heater. Our fridge is Euro-designed highly energy efficient. We have two antique buffets getting restored with quartz-recycled glass counter-top from Absolute Kitchen & Bath (a local kitchen contractor).  We had our floors restored to their natural finish by Hapax Concrete (another local yocal). You’ll also find temperature-control curtains we installed throughout our warehouse which retain heat and/or coolness, in addition to ceiling and exhaust fans. Heck, even our bathrooms have organic castile soap for washing our hands.

organic-soap
Soap made with certified organic oils makes hand-washing fun!

We don’t just say we’re green, we are green. After all actions speak much louder than words.

One of the biggest challenges we faced was waste from plastic. Many of our raw materials arrive wrapped in large plastic bags, for protection during shipping. We couldn’t recycle this type of plastic in our container, and we couldn’t find any practical way to reuse such a massive quantity of bags. Thankfully, Mr. John came to our rescue two years ago.

john-plastic
Studly Mr John gets a work out hauling all that plastic and we gals look forward to the eye candy when he comes to collect :)~

John volunteers his time to collect plastic bags for a local school. The bags are then recycled into plastic lumber for an assortment of furniture and decking. The school that collects the most tonnage wins and ever since we’ve been doing this “our” school (the smallest one in Norfolk) wins the contest and we suspect our contribution of plastic helps greatly, as well as Mr. John’s efforts 🙂

This Earth Day think about ways you can change your daily habits. Try small changes like taking your own bags to the market or using a refillable water bottle. You’ll be surprised how quickly it becomes a part of your daily lifestyle, not just something you do on Earth Day, after all…

GOOD PLANETS ARE HARD TO FIND

Happy Earth Day!

Are you ready to dispose of your chemical-laden, plastic-based bedding?

CozyPure offers a nice selection of everything from mattresses and toppers to comforters and linens all made from renewable, sustainable, natural and organic materials. And the annual Earth Day sale is going on through April 30th.
BE GREEN. SLEEP GREEN. SAVE GREEN.
